With physician oversight, the cardiac Device Technician performs independently in the technical management of implanted cardiac pacemaker, ICD, bi-ventricular, and loop recorder devices. Manages device patients and their care implementing treatment plans in collaboration with physicians and other device team members. Able to perform basic interrogation, adjustments to programming as per protocol or specific order, and able to troubleshoot advanced device issues. Performs device clinic triage including patient instruction and education regarding device and remote monitoring.

Position Summary

The Cardiac Device Technician serves as the primary liaison between Trinity Health clinical staff and cardiac device vendor representatives. This role supports program growth within the Device Clinic, facilitates regional collaboration across Trinity Health sites, and ensures high‑quality care for patients with implanted cardiac devices.

With physician oversight, the Cardiac Device Technician independently manages the technical aspects of implanted cardiac devices including pacemakers, ICDs, biventricular/CRT devices, and implantable loop recorders. This position is responsible for device interrogation, programming adjustments per protocol or provider order, advanced troubleshooting, and comprehensive management of device patients. The technician also plays a key role in patient education, device clinic triage, remote monitoring, and coordination of care.

Essential Functions

  • Acts as a primary liaison between Trinity Health staff and cardiac device vendor representatives.

  • Assists in planning program growth within the Device Clinic and facilitates regional collaboration with cardiology teams across West Michigan.

  • Serves as a clinical and technical resource to Cardiac Device Technician I staff; provides guidance and support.

  • Performs interrogation, interpretation, and reprogramming of pacemakers, ICDs, biventricular/CRT devices, and implantable loop recorders with minimal physician supervision.

  • Troubleshoots complex and critical device issues and initiates timely resolution.

  • Collaborates with physicians regarding device status; documents device analysis accurately in the EMR and appropriate vendor software.

  • Educates patients and families on device functionality, remote monitoring, and follow‑up protocols.

  • Completes accurate device reports and generates proper documentation and billing data.

  • Oversees Device Clinic schedules to ensure timely patient access.

  • Assists electrophysiology physicians and staff with patient education and clinical workflows.

  • Collaborates with clerical and medical assistant colleagues; assists with onboarding, orientation, and annual competency evaluation.

  • Travels to regional offices for assigned device clinic coverage, as needed.

  • Maintains device equipment, software, and programming rooms; ensures adequate supply levels and reports safety or equipment issues.

  • Applies Holter monitor devices; instructs patients on use, event recording, and return.

  • Performs interactive Holter scanning, data archival, and arrhythmia recognition; prepares reports for physician interpretation.

  • Assists with development, review, and revision of Device Clinic policies, procedures, and forms.

  • Leads software installation, data entry, retrieval, reporting, and assists with vendor software/hardware upgrades.

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

Required

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification within 90 days of hire

  • Associate’s degree in a related field

Preferred

  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)

  • License - Certified Cardiac Device Specialist (CCDS)

  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred

  • Minimum of 2 years of training in pacemaker, ICD, and loop recorder technology, including device vendor‑led education from introductory through advanced levels
    OR

  • Minimum of 6 months direct device clinic experience with physician supervision and device vendor training over a 12‑month period (e.g., Biotronik, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Abbott/St. Jude, ELA)
    OR

  • Completion of a formal device technology certification program from a recognized training institution

  • Experience with remote monitoring platforms (e.g., Biotronik, CareLink, Latitude, Merlin)

  • Commitment to ongoing continuing education to remain current with device advancements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in cardiology (clinic, hospital, or device industry representative role)

  • Extensive working knowledge of implantable cardiac pacemakers, ICDs, CRT devices, and loop recorders
