About this role

Overview

Build, maintain, repair, and inspect freight cars by performing the following duties.

 

Extra Board Shift

 

Initial pay between $27.04/hr - $30.42/hr based off experience. Salary will increase to $33.80/hr once qualified (typically takes 6 months to a year)

Responsibilities

  • Build, maintain, dismantle, paint and inspect all freight cars, both wood and steel.
  • Inspect and measure parts to detect wear, misalignment, or other problems.
  • Pipe and inspection work in connection with air brake equipment on cars.
  • Inspecting, Testing and Repairing air brakes and freight car parts.
  • Operating punches and shears.
  • Painting, surfacing, lettering, cutting stencils, and removing paint.
  • Performs car inspections.
  • Performs oxy acetylene cutting and electric welding.
  • Visually inspects and tests machinery and equipment.
  • Listens for unusual sounds from machines or equipment to detect malfunction and discusses machine operation variations with supervisors or other maintenance workers to diagnose problem or repair machine.
  • Cleans and lubricates shafts, bearings, gears, and other parts of machinery.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Associate’s degree (A.S.) in applied sciences with emphasis on mechanical applications or equivalent experience as a rail car inspector or repairer may be considered in lieu of the A.S. degree at the discretion of the General Mechanical Superintendent; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

 

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, us¬ing whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Must be familiar with AAR, FRA, and DOT rules and regulations; must be able to speak and write English; must be qualified welder.

 

LICENSES, CERTIFICATES, OR REGISTRATIONS

Must have current driver’s license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The em-ployee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.

 

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
