About this role

Overview

Responsible for cutting, staining and preparing tissue samples for the pathologist to review. This position is also responsible for prioritizing testing procedures and completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner and maintaining proper accurate records of all tests done in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Receive tissue specimens and enter accurately into the log book.
  • Process tissue for frozen sectioning.
  • Section tissue; stain slides, coverslips and labels slides.
  • Review ALL slides and maps before taking them to the physician.
  • Log in and prepare all incoming consultation slides for review.
  • Coverslips prepared slides manually and utilizing automated systems. 
  • Records in laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared.
  • Verifies match of surgical slides, file all slides.
  • Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine staining on automatic stainers.
  • Maintain order in the laboratory and compliance to safety regulations.
  • Responsible for documentation of daily QC/QA charts for all laboratory equipment.
  • Identifies problems and troubleshoot under supervision.
  • Appropriately dispose of biohazardous waste
  • Follows all OSHA and APDerm regulatory safety policies.
  • Updates Laboratory Management Manual yearly or as policies and procedures change.
  • Accepts responsibility for maintenance and storage of all laboratory records and patient slides, according to law. 
  • Participates in continuing education/in-service training sessions sponsored by the department.
  • Manages digital imaging archives of the Unit including the transfer of images from a digital camera to the imaging software.   Oversees all laboratory functions.
  • Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.

  • Support APDerm’s mission and culture of high-quality standards by carrying out applicable policies, procedures and established industry standards, laws and regulations.   • Complete all assigned required training by the deadline including, but not limited the Code of Conduct, Privacy & Data Security, and OSHA.

Qualifications

  • Certified Mohs College preferred.
  • S., B.S or B.A in a biological or chemical science and/or completion of a NACLS accredited histology technician training program highly desired.
  • 1 year of experience as a histology technician.
  • HT(ASCP) certification eligible.
  • Must demonstrate the ability to embed, section and stain routine tissue with acceptable quantity and quality.
  • Must possess manual dexterity and good visual acuity.
  • Ability to methodically record data with a very high level of accuracy.

  • Good organizational skills; detail oriented.
  • Good interpersonal skills to interact effectively with co-workers and department staff.
  • Ability to identify problems.
  • Ability to work under general supervision.

The salary for this role will range from USD $36.00 to 54.00 per hour based on full-time employment. Salary offers are based on a wide range of factors including but not limited to years of experience, location, relevant skills, training, education, etc. Certain roles may be eligible for performance-based incentive compensation and/or long-term incentives.
