About this role

The Quality Control Engineer owns incoming inspection and supplier quality for all parts, components, and sub-assemblies entering Allied Maker’s production process. Working across materials including hand-blown glass, machined and spun metals, alabaster, and wood, this role defines quality standards, builds inspection systems, and partners with vendors to resolve issues at the root cause. This role is critical to maintaining the craft, consistency, and reliability expected from Allied Maker products.


Key Responsibilities

Incoming Inspection Across Materials

  • Develop inspection plans, sampling strategies, and acceptance standards for each material type
  • Inspect glass for dimensional accuracy, clarity, inclusions, and color consistency
  • Inspect machined/spun metals for dimensional conformance, wall thickness, and surface finish
  • Evaluate alabaster for veining, translucency, and structural integrity
  • Verify wood components for species, moisture content, joinery, and finish quality

Supplier Quality & Vendor Development

  • Act as primary quality contact for vendors
  • Lead root-cause analysis (8D, 5-Why, Fishbone) and corrective actions
  • Qualify new suppliers and parts via First Article Inspection (FAI)
  • Track supplier performance (defects, responsiveness, quality consistency)
  • Conduct supplier audits and site visits

Nonconformance & Continuous Improvement

  • Disposition nonconforming material (rework, RTV, scrap, use-as-is)
  • Lead cross-functional MRB decisions
  • Analyze defect trends and cost of poor quality
  • Drive improvements to reduce scrap, rework, and disruptions
  • Partner with Assembly & Manufacturing Engineering on upstream improvements

Standards & Documentation

  • Build and maintain inspection standards and boundary samples
  • Create clear, repeatable inspection work instructions
  • Maintain calibration of measurement tools and traceable records
  • Ensure documentation is properly recorded in NetSuite and internal systems
  • Support UL compliance by validating incoming components

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Industrial, Materials, or Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent experience)
  • 3–5 years of quality engineering experience in manufacturing or custom/luxury goods
  • Strong ability to read engineering drawings and GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
  • Proficiency with precision measurement tools (calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.)
  • Experience leading root-cause investigations and supplier corrective actions
  • Ability to define and standardize subjective quality (visual / craftsmanship)
  • Strong communication skills with internal teams and external vendors

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in lighting, luxury goods, architectural hardware, or custom furniture
  • Familiarity with UL 1598 / UL 8750 standards
  • ASQ certification (CQE, CQA) or Lean / Six Sigma
  • Experience with natural materials (stone, glass, wood, alabaster)
  • Experience with NetSuite or similar systems

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • On-site in Glen Cove workshop
  • Split between the inspection area, production floor, and desk work
  • Exposure to shop environment (dust, finishes, moving equipment)
  • PPE required in designated areas
  • Must be able to stand/walk for extended periods
  • Lift up to 35 lbs and handle fragile materials
  • Occasional travel to vendors
