We are looking for a Senior Manufacturing Engineer to own the end-to-end transition of complex opto-mechanical subsystems from pilot production to global deployment. In this role, you will drive New Product Introduction (NPI), ensuring that our precision hardware is not only manufacturable but also "field-ready." You will spend time in our labs developing assembly and optical alignment processes, and travel to IonQ sites and customer locations to lead installations and ensure site readiness. This role is ideal for a hands-on engineer who enjoys high-precision technical challenges and wants to see their work operational in the field.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the manufacturing transition (NPI) for optomechanical subsystems, developing robust assembly, alignment, and testing procedures.
  • Own the "Design for Deployment" (DfD) feedback loop, using field data to drive hardware and process improvements.
  • Perform hands-on assembly and high-precision alignment of optical components and vacuum systems.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive manufacturing documentation, including Work Instructions (WIs), BOMs, and inspection protocols.
  • Support site readiness and lead field installations at IonQ data centers and customer premises.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to troubleshoot hardware issues during the production and deployment phases.
  • Identify and implement tooling solutions to improve throughput and repeatability.
  • Document all as-built configurations, deviations, and environment-specific considerations for each installation.

Requirements:

  • Ability to travel up 30% annually and be onsite in Bothell the remainder of the time.
  • Ability to support on-site subsystem and/or system installations lasting up to 8 weeks at a time.
  • 5+ years of experience in a manufacturing engineering, NPI, or systems integration role.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
  • Proven hands-on experience with precision optomechanical assembly, laser systems, or high-vacuum hardware.
  • Experience creating and maintaining detailed technical documentation and process flows.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware in both lab and field environments.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with remote and cross-functional teams, including customers as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven expertise in aligning and assembling complex free-space optical systems, including lenses, mirrors, and prisms on optical breadboards.
  • Ability to design and implement custom jigs and assembly fixtures in CAD.
  • Direct experience installing complex hardware in data centers or remote laboratories.
  • A history of independently resolving hardware failures in the field with minimal supervision.

The approximate base salary range for this position is $131,962 - $172,773. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, and equity.

Location: This role will work onsite at our office located in Bothell, WA.
Travel: An ability to travel (domestically and internationally) up to 8 weeks at a time during deployments and 30% otherwise.
Job ID:  1559

Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity.  Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available.
