Job Summary

Kairos Power is seeking a highly motivated Regulatory Compliance Engineer III with a background in nuclear operations. In this role, you will collaborate with engineering operations, site integration, design, safety analysis, and licensing teams to develop facility operating solutions that align with Kairos Power’s Mission and comply with Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) regulations, license conditions and licensing commitments.  Additionally, you will be a key interface for communications between Kairos Power facility operations and the NRC staff providing oversight of the facility.

This role will be onsite in Oak Ridge, TN. 

Responsibilities

  • Provide regulatory guidance and support to the operations team to develop facility operation strategies and implement programs and procedures and to ensure compliance with NRC regulations, license conditions and commitments is maintained.
  • Serve as the point of contact for NRC personnel performing oversight of facility operations.
  • Lead preparation for, performance of and responses to NRC inspections of facility operations.
  • Maintain facility Technical Specifications, FSAR and other licensing basis documents.
  • Support 10 CFR 50.59 and 10 CFR Part 21 screenings and evaluations.
  • Identify potential regulatory risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Perform event reportability determinations and develop NRC event notifications in accordance with regulatory requirements and license conditions.
  • Prepare correspondence with the NRC including periodic reports, responses to inspection findings, requests for information, licensee event reports, and operator licensing applications.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Nuclear , Mechanical, Electrical, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience in nuclear facility operations, with NRC-licensed operator (SRO or RO license) experience preferred.
  • Regulatory compliance experience is not required – we are willing to provide training, experience interacting directly with the NRC is preferred.
  • Experience developing compliance-based programs and procedures - Procedure Professionals Association (PPA) certification preferred.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Understanding of NRC regulations (10 CFR Part 50, 10 CFR Part 21, etc.) and regulatory guidance (regulatory guides, inspection procedures, etc.).
  • Demonstrated technical writing ability.
  • Knowledge of operational protocols and implementation of operating procedures.
  • Demonstrated coordination skills including advisory, relationship and stakeholder management skills fit to handle a small / start-up environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to earn the trust of team members and management.
  • Eager to learn and develop skills in nuclear compliance, with a proactive and growth-oriented mindset.

Physical Demands

  • Ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, scissor lifts, articulated boom lifts and the like.
  • Setting up and transferring temporary structures (e.g. scaffolding, ladders).
  • Moving self in different positions to accomplish tasks in various environments including tight and confined spaces.
  • Remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods.
  • Moving about to accomplish tasks or moving from one worksite to another.
  • Adjusting, moving, transporting, installing, positioning, or removing objects up to 30 pounds in all directions.
  • Communicating with others to exchange information.

Safety and PPE

  • Reading and interpreting hazardous warning signs.

  • Color identification: detecting, distinguishing, recognizing and identifying colors.
  • Wearing proper PPE, to include face mask, face shields, gloves, safety shoes, etc.

Travel

  • Some travel may be required, up to 35%

  • Requires schedule flexibility occasionally.
  • Requires non-standard work-week hours occasionally,
  • Requires extended hours to support launch and critical project timelines occasionally.
