About this role

Who We Are

General Catalyst is a global investment and transformation company that partners with the world’s most ambitious entrepreneurs to drive resilience and applied AI. We support founders with a long-term view who challenge the status quo, partnering with them from seed to growth stage and beyond. With offices in the U.S., Europe, and India, we have supported the growth of 800+ businesses, including Airbnb, Anduril, Anthropic, Applied Intuition, Commure, Glean, Gusto, Helsing, Hubspot, Kayak, Livongo, Mistral, Ramp, Samsara, Snap, Stripe, Sword, and Zepto.

The General Catalyst Institute (GCI) sits at the intersection of innovation, policy, and global resilience, working alongside founders, policymakers, and industry leaders to scale transformative technologies across healthcare, financial services, defense, advanced manufacturing, and energy. Our mission is to ensure that the most important companies of our time can navigate and shape the policy environments that will define their success, because better alignment between the public and private sectors is essential to driving long-term growth and a positive societal impact.

About The Role

We are seeking a Social Media Director to lead and elevate GCI’s digital presence across platforms. This role is not about maintaining channels; it’s about shaping narratives.

You will be responsible for creating and executing a dynamic, multi-platform content strategy that brings GCI’s work to life: from highlighting the founders we support, to translating complex policy developments into clear, compelling insights for policymakers, policy influencers, and key opinion leaders.

This is a unique opportunity for someone who understands both content and context, someone who can move seamlessly between storytelling, policy, and technology, and who is motivated by the idea of influencing how critical issues are understood at the highest levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own and execute GCI’s and GCI’s CEO’s social media strategy across platforms (LinkedIn, X, and emerging channels), ensuring a consistent, high-impact voice
  • Develop and produce compelling digital content including posts, threads, short-form video, and campaign narratives that highlight:
    • GCI’s advocacy positions and policy impact
    • GCI activity during key global convenings
      Founders across our portfolio
    • Key issues shaping innovation (AI, cyber, defense, healthcare, fintech, energy)
  • Translate complex policy and regulatory developments into clear, engaging content for a policy-savvy audience
  • Partner closely with internal teams (marketing, communications, investors, etc.) to surface timely insights and amplify strategic priorities
  • Build and manage editorial calendars tied to key moments: policy announcements, global events, and GCI convenings
  • Identify opportunities to engage with and grow an audience of policymakers, influencers, and industry leaders
  • Track performance and optimize content based on engagement, reach, and influence
  • Support amplification of major initiatives, including summits, fly-ins, and reports

Qualifications

  • 5 - 8 years of experience in digital media, social media strategy, or marketing (experience in government, policy, tech, or public affairs is a strong plus)
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, with the ability to make complex topics accessible and compelling
  • A strong understanding of how content performs across platforms and how to adapt tone and format accordingly
  • Familiarity with the policy landscape and an interest in how government shapes innovation. You should be familiar with the policy landscape in Washington DC and have an interest to learn about European Union and India politics so you can effectively help shape our narratives and storytelling in each region
  • Experience managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-performance environment
  • Strong judgment and attention to detail, especially when communicating on policy-related topics
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to work across diverse teams

At General Catalyst, we believe the best ideas and the boldest outcomes come from people who bring different perspectives to the table. We know that outlier outcomes require us to think differently than everyone else. That’s why we’re committed to building teams that reflect a wide range of backgrounds, experiences and ways of thinking. Diverse perspectives are essential to our mission of responsible innovation and creating inclusive prosperity.
