Job Summary

Job Title: Specialized Dialysis RN Location: Miami VA Healthcare System (including 7 Community-Based Outpatient Clinics) Period of Performance: 08/12/2025 – 08/11/2030 Shift Schedule: PRN; ten (10) hour shift 6:30am-5pm Position Description: The Dialysis Registered Nurse (RN) provides specialized care to patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), acute kidney injury (AKI), and late-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD) in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The dialysis unit supports a capacity of 4 beds and 14 chairs per shift, delivering hemodialysis for scheduled patients, while emergent dialysis is performed in acute care areas, including the Critical Care and Emergency Department. After-hours dialysis is supported by an on-call nurse. This position demands expertise in renal care management, critical thinking, and effective communication to address the unique needs of patients undergoing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis treatments in a variety of clinical settings.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities: Unit Description: The dialysis unit provides hemodialysis to both inpatients and outpatients. The unit has a capacity of four (4) beds and fourteen chairs per shift capacity. Hemodialysis inpatient is provided in the Acute care areas including Critical Care and Emergency Department. All other patients are transported to the dialysis unit. An on-call nurse provides hemodialysis after hours. Skills: The RN dialysis nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to patients end-stage renal disease who are being maintained by intermittent with hemodialysis and/or peritoneal dialysis in either a chronic unit setting or a critical care/acute care unit setting. Either area requires the nurse to provide treatment utilizing the nursing process, according to the written procedures and policies of the hemodialysis unit. The dialysis nurse is required to perform hemodialysis via a fistula, graft, or venous catheter. Dialysis RN Skills: The RN Dialysis nurse include but are not limited to: • Professional nurse with specialized knowledge and demonstrates advanced beginner skills when providing and directing care for patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD), acute kidney injury (AKI), and late-stage chronic kidney disease (CKD). • Collaborates with other disciplines/departments to achieve desired patient outcomes. • Functions as primary nurse for ESRD patient panel and serves as key resource assisting patients navigate the healthcare system. • Completes documentation for all clinical and technical recordkeeping in the electronic health record and treatment flowsheets in accordance with established policies and procedures. • Monitors, tracks/trends, and reports ongoing care continuity needs and outcomes to the interdisciplinary team. • The nurse will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and outcomes utilization.• Practice includes directing other providers. • Partners with the patient, family, and interdisciplinary team to promote effective and safe transitions across the health care continuum. • This nurse has fundamental experience with the situations in which they are ultimately expected to perform, integrating theoretical concepts, basic critical thinking skills, and technically skilled practice. • Plans and delivers technically competent care to patients in alignment with the ANA Standards of Nursing Practice. • Responsible and accountable for individual nursing practice and determines the appropriate delegation of tasks ensuring assigned delegated tasks are completed by team members. • Manages nursing care of patients, organizes, and completes own assignments in a safe and timely manner, assisting team members as necessary. • Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of interdisciplinary care. • Establishes a therapeutic relationship, allowing the patient to achieve optimal function through assessment and treatment of their health enhancing the patient experience, satisfaction, and/or safety. • Treats all patients, families and other caregivers with dignity and respect incorporating knowledge, values, and beliefs into nursing care delivery without judgement or discrimination. • Recognizes ethical issues related to professional nursing practice and behaves in an appropriate manner through observance of established policies and ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses. • Applies high reliability principles and I CARE values to improve patient outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements: • BLS and ACLS certifications accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) • Unrestricted license to practice nursing in one of the States, Territories, or Commonwealths of the United States or the District of Columbia • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of current nursing experience providing hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis • Education: ASN accepted; BSN preferred  Education must have been completed at a school accredited by the ACEN or CCNE.
