Position Summary

The Neurosurgeon provides comprehensive neurosurgical care to patients within a VA medical facility, delivering high-quality outpatient, inpatient, and operative services in accordance with nationally recognized clinical standards. This role includes direct patient care, surgical procedures, postoperative management, and participation in quality improvement activities.

 

Work Schedule

  • Standard clinical and surgical hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM

  • No routine evenings, weekends, or federal holidays unless otherwise scheduled.

Primary Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Care (Approx. 85%)

  • Provide outpatient neurosurgery clinic services, including evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment planning.

  • Perform neurosurgical operative procedures within granted clinical privileges.

  • Conduct inpatient consults, bedside evaluations, and follow-up care.

  • Provide intraoperative presence for all assigned neurosurgical cases.

  • Conduct postoperative rounds in surgical units and intensive care settings.

  • Deliver discharge education and coordinate follow-up care.

  • Communicate test results to patients in accordance with established clinical standards.

  • Document all patient care accurately and timely in the electronic health record.

Surgical Services

  • Perform a broad range of neurosurgical procedures, including but not limited to:

    • Spine surgery (cervical, thoracic, lumbar)

    • Decompression, fusion, and instrumentation

    • Cranial and ventricular shunt procedures

    • Diskectomy, laminectomy, and laminotomy

    • Microsurgical procedures

  • Typical workload includes approximately:

    • 8 patients per clinic session

    • 3 surgical cases per operating session

Administrative & Quality Activities (Approx. 15%)

  • Participate in morbidity and mortality conferences.

  • Attend neurosurgery and surgical staff meetings.

  • Engage in quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.

  • Complete required quality and outcome documentation.

  • Adhere to patient safety, infection control, and risk management standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • MD or DO from an accredited medical school.

  • Completion of an ACGME-accredited Neurosurgery residency.

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible by the American Board of Neurological Surgery.

  • Active, unrestricted medical license in any U.S. state or territory.

  • Current BLS and ACLS certification.

  • Eligibility for credentialing and privileging at a VA medical facility.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal and written).

Professional Standards

  • Practice medicine in accordance with:

    • American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) guidelines

    • Joint Commission standards

    • VA clinical and patient safety standards

  • Maintain continuing medical education required for certification and privileging.
