About this role

ABOUT THE TEAM

At Mural, we’re reimagining how teams think and create together. The Design and Research team brings clarity to complexity, shaping experiences that help people collaborate, ideate, and solve problems visually. We partner deeply with engineering, product, and research to invent the next generation of collaborative work—combining craft, systems thinking, and bold exploration.

YOUR MISSION

As a Principal Product Designer focused on our Integrated Workflows Platform, you’ll define and design how Mural connects to the broader enterprise software ecosystem. You will own the end-to-end design of a reusable, low-friction integration platform that enables users, admins, and product teams to connect workflows across tools with confidence and control.

This role sits at the intersection of product experience, platform design, and technical systems. You will design experiences that abstract real complexity, including APIs, permissions, security, data flow, and configuration, into clear, trustworthy, and scalable user journeys. You’ll work on problems where usability, correctness, and reliability matter as much as visual polish.

You’ll be successful if you can think like a systems designer, collaborate fluently with engineers, and create frameworks that multiple product teams can build on without reinventing patterns or creating fragmentation.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

Player Responsibilities (Individual Contributor Work):

  • Own the end-to-end design of Mural’s integrated workflows platform, from concept through production and evolution.

  • Collaborate with our IAM team to design user and admin experiences for connecting systems, configuring integrations, managing permissions, and understanding data flow.

  • Translate technical concepts such as REST APIs, authentication, authorization, scopes, and webhooks into clear, usable product experiences.

  • Design reusable patterns and frameworks that enable multiple product teams to build integrations consistently and safely.

  • Partner deeply with engineering to ensure design decisions align with platform architecture, security requirements, and scalability constraints.

  • Create high-fidelity designs and prototypes that communicate intent, edge cases, and system behavior clearly.

  • Anticipate failure modes, error states, and recovery paths, designing for trust, debuggability, and resilience.

Coach Responsibilities (Practice Leadership):

  • Set a high bar for systems design, platform thinking, and technical UX across the design organization.

  • Mentor designers working on adjacent product areas, helping them design on top of shared platform capabilities.

  • Partner with design systems, research, and engineering leaders to create shared standards and patterns for integration experiences.

  • Influence product and design strategy by collaborating with product teams across the organization to leverage your platform to create low-friction, user-facing experiences.

Hybrid Responsibilities (Both Player & Coach):

  • Reframe integration problems beyond individual features, designing holistic journeys that span setup, use, monitoring, and evolution over time.

  • Lead cross-functional workshops to align product, engineering, and security stakeholders around platform direction and tradeoffs.

  • Collaborate with product and data partners to define success metrics for adoption, reliability, and usability of the platform.

  • Advocate for long-term platform health while balancing near-term product needs and delivery pressure.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • 10+ years of product design experience, with significant experience in complex enterprise or platform-based SaaS products.

  • Proven ability to design systems and frameworks that scale across teams and use cases.

  • Strong understanding of how APIs, authentication, authorization, and data flows work, and how to design humane interfaces around them.

  • Exceptional systems thinking, with the ability to anticipate downstream impact and edge cases.

  • High craft bar, including clarity, hierarchy, interaction design, and thoughtful handling of complex states.

  • Experience partnering closely with engineering on technically deep problems.

  • Comfort operating as a single-owner IC with broad scope and high accountability.

  • Strong communication skills, especially when explaining complex systems to diverse audiences.

Also great if you bring

  • Experience designing integration platforms, automation tools, or workflow orchestration systems.

  • Experience designing workflows that connect AI agents to external systems, including event-driven triggers, tool invocation, and human-in-the-loop controls.

  • Background in admin or developer-facing product experiences.

  • Familiarity with enterprise security, compliance, or governance considerations.

  • Experience leading greenfield platform initiatives from vision to adoption.
