  • The Nurse Technician role provides an enrolled nursing student the opportunity to gain hands‑on clinical experience in a professional healthcare environment. Under the direct supervision of a registered nurse, the Nurse Technician supports the delivery of direct and indirect patient care while developing foundational nursing skills. This role offers exposure to oncology, immunotherapy, and blood and marrow transplant (BMT) care in a fast‑paced, high‑acuity ambulatory setting.
  • Functions within the scope of the Certified Nursing Assistant (NA‑C) role (see NA‑C job description) and may perform additional clinical skills for which the Nurse Technician has received training and demonstrated competency through their nursing program.
  • Authorized clinical skills must be verified by the nursing program. A signed school clinical skills list is required upon hire and at the beginning of each academic quarter, as requested by the supervisor.

This position is a per diem position at our Southlake Union location.  The days/hours for this position is variable and could include weekends and evenings

Responsibilities

  • Assists with patient flow and rooming activities
  • Prepares patient care areas, including bay turnaround between patients
  • Performs equipment checks (e.g., wall oxygen, suction, otoscope, ophthalmoscope)
  • Obtains and documents vital signs, weight, orthostatic vital signs, and recognizes abnormal parameters
  • Performs 12‑lead EKGs
  • Implements fall prevention strategies, including safe patient mobilization and lift equipment use
  • Documents care in the electronic medical record
  • Adheres to OSHA safety standards, infection prevention practices, and HIPAA requirements
  • Demonstrates therapeutic and professional communication with patients and team members
  • Performs courier duties for Pharmacy, as assigned
  • Performs additional duties consistent with training, verified competencies, and delegated by the supervising registered nurse.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Currently enrolled and in good standing in a Washington State Board of Nursing approved accredited associate degree (ADN) or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program.
  • Successful completion of at least two academic quarters that included a clinical component prior to hire.
  • Current BLS AHA Health Provider Card (or equivalent course, such as by the American Red Cross) and renewal required every two years.
  • Demonstrates engagement in continuous quality improvement initiatives
  • Responds effectively to emergency and disaster situations in accordance with organizational policies
  • Proficient in electronic communication tools and standard office software
  • Functions effectively in a fast-paced, high-acuity healthcare environment
  • Demonstrates strong organizational, prioritization, and problem-solving skills
  • Utilizes telecommunication and electronic systems appropriately
  • Communicates clearly and professionally, both verbally and in writing
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal skills and a commitment to patient-and family-centered care

Preferred:

  • Entering the final year of an accredited ADN or BSN nursing program
  • Interest in learning about oncology and complex patient populations.
The hourly pay range for this position is from $29.21, which includes the per diem differential, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications.  Although Fred Hutch is not sponsoring most H-1B visas at this time, candidates who already hold an H-1B sponsored by another organization and are currently in the U.S. may be eligible for this position. This position is a per diem position at our Southlake Union location.  The days/hours for this position is variable and could include weekends and evenings Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees access to a retirement savings plan, an employee assistance program, and paid sick leave (1 hour for every 30 hours worked).
