Overview

FG Automotive is on a mission to make the world safer, healthier and more productive through our brands, Filtran, (advanced transmission filtration technology) and Flow Dry, (desiccant components for automotive safety). 

 

Reporting to the Director of Product Development, the Project Engineering Manager (Product Development) is responsible for managing the design and development of automotive transmission filtration solutions and will be principally located at the Des Plaines, IL facility This includes developing, supporting, and managing a team of design and project engineers.   

Responsibilities

  • Design Department Management
    • Implement ISO16949 procedures that facilitate smooth project flow of superior designs and ensure conformance to these procedures.
    • Manage projects (project tracking sheet updated every week).
    • Project summaries (Gantt charts) updated every week.
    • Development of direct reports: training, mentoring, continuous improvement.
    • Inter and Intra-departmental collaboration achieved.
    • Conduct Design Reviews and implement GD&T standards on prints reviews and approvals.
    • Implement Plastics Design standards and Molding design standards during 3D design reviews and prints reviews.
    • Product designs are optimized through use of FEA and CFD analysis.
    • Product designs are optimized for cost-efficient manufacture at production quantities.
  • Ensure quality and correctness of design department’s output.
    • Final approval of design proposals.
  • Product Innovation
    • Existing designs improved.
    • New designs generated to meet customer requirements
  • Commitments (due dates) realized.
    • High-priority, customer-driven due dates given utmost attention and missed only in case of emergencies.
    • Internal or “lower level” commitments missed only if agreed upon and rescheduled by the involved parties.
  • Other duties and projects completed as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Electromechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 4+ years of experience in designing Automotive Plastic parts to meet customer requirements for functionality, cost, quality and manufacturability.
  • 4+ years of experience in managing or supervising an engineering group that is responsible for designing & developing automotive plastic products to meet customer requirements for functionality, cost, and quality (manufacturability).
  • 4+ years of experience in management design of plastic molded parts that can be tooled cost-effectively: minimal slides, avoidance of additional hydraulic action, etc.
  • Understands engineering specifications and the tests required. Experience optimizing designs based upon test results.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Project or some other means of project tracking.
  • Has worked in an environment driven by specified due dates: either internal or external.
  • Familiar with rigorous Automotive quality standards for product launches (ISO standards) including : PPAP, DFMEA, DVP&R, Gant Charts, et. al.
  • Understanding & utilization of 3D CAD modeling Tools (Pro/E preferred). Has an understanding of fundamental best design practices: simple sketches, draft before rounds, intelligent feature creation, etc. Has an understanding of parent/child relationships and can avoid them.
  • Experience producing fully drafted and rounded parts (parts where tooling is made directly from the solid model). Parts must have minimal geometry checks or small "sliver" surfaces. 

 

 Desired:

  • Advanced engineering degree (MS, etc).
  • Good understanding of fluid dynamics with some CFD experience.
  • Experience in using or implementing product design optimization using engineering design tools such as CFD & FEA analysis.
  • 4+ years hands-on project engineering experience in dealing with Ford, GM, Chrysler or large Tier 1 suppliers to the automotive industry.
  • Experience with transmission filtration related products.
  • Experience with transmission pump and /or valve shift control system design, function & operation.
  • Experience with production of similar product at volumes from 150,000 / year to 2,000,000 / year.
  • Experience in testing & validation of products to specific standards including data analysis.
  • Proficiency in fulfilling the design requirements specified in the ISO16949 procedures: Gantt chart, DFMEA, DVP&R, drawing/design control, manufacturing review, etc.
  • Experience in using Pro/E, SolidWorks, IDEAS, CATIA, or UG,   
  • Experience with top-down design (skeleton models) in Pro/E.
  • Proficient with surfacing in Pro/ENGINEER.
  • Experienced in using MS Access, and SPC software
  • Fluent in other languages desired (German, Chinese, Japanese and/or Korean).

Compensation and Benefits:

  • Base Salary: $135-150K annually, exempt
