About this role

Overview

D342 is seeking a seasoned Materials Engineer specializing in marine metallic alloys to contribute to both the Materials Engineering and Base Materials Technology groups within D342 Materials Engineering and Laboratory Services.  The successful candidate will serve as a mentor to both groups, contribute to the development of metallic additive manufacturing material-process combinations, may serve as lead in complex metallic-material based issues, address metallic material non-conformances, help develop future concepts, review test results, and serve as a senior technical reviewer amongst any other needs of the two groups.  Extensive experience with alloys commonly used in submarine design and construction is necessary.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's of Science in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 20 years of experience with marine alloys in a shipbuilding environment
  • Strong familiarity with material specifications (MIL, ASTM, ASM, fed specs, etc.)

Preferred:

  • Supervisor or manager experience
  • A master’s in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical
  • Experience with metallic additive manufacturing

Skills

  • The applicants must be able to communicate clearly and concisely to all levels of management, both verbally and in writing, and it is expected that the applicant be able to write technical reports and correspondence using good grammar with correct spelling and punctuation. 
  • Applicants must be personable, interested in working as part of a team, interested in learning, willing to interact with coworkers, comfortable in interacting directly with individual contributors and with upper management, and cultivating a positive environment. 
  • Ability to mentor and provide positive and constructive feedback
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint is required.
