About this role

Overview

Electric Boat is seeking to hire an experienced NC (Numerical Control) programmer to join its technical team in order to support meeting the needs of company growth driven by Columbia and Virginia Class programs. The Groton, CT Machine Shop has been the premier manufacturer of high-profile and intricate submarine components manufactured out of exotic materials such as Inconel, Monel, K-Monel, Titanium.

The selected individual must have a strong background in not just the development of efficient tool paths to support G-Code generation, but must have at least 4 years of experience working as a machinist in a high-mix, low-volume job shop environment and be capable of independently selecting appropriate tooling, cutting parameters, speeds, feeds, etc. The selected individual must also have experience in the machining of large or complex components on a variety of machinery such as horizontal boring mills, vertical turning centers or 2, 3 and 5 axis vertical mills and horizontal lathes.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Generate Numerical Control Programs to direct machining of parts on CNC machine tools.
  • Analyze drawings, sketches, and design data for manufacturing requirements.
  • Select tooling and machining parameters for effective utilization of equipment and economy of production.
  • Create and develop 2, 3, 4 and 5 axis part programs for CNC machining of complex parts in turning and milling/drilling applications.
  • Estimate process time required for setup and machining of parts.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve problems with new and existing part programs on the shop floor.
  • Review part travelers/routers and make suggestions on changes required to support process changes.

 

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ability to work all shifts and or “Swing Shift”
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • 5+ years of machinist experience
  • 5+ years of experience in setup and operation of CNC machinery
  • Deep understanding of standard G-Codes and M-Codes used to control CNC Machines
  • Experience in supporting the machining of large and complex mechanical components
  • Experience working in an ISO 9001 certified machine shop

Preferred:

  • Computer Aided Design experience
  • NC programming experience in a job shop environment
  • Experience with Siemens NX-CAM, Master-cam X10
  • Experience with Siemens, Fanuc CNC Controls
  • College degree

Skills

  • Competence in interpretation of mechanical drawings and complex blueprints.
  • Thorough understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Ability to compute mathematical problems including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry for calculating angles and distances.
  • Thorough knowledge of machining data (i.e. speeds, feeds, tooling) for cutting a variety of materials (Steels, Stainless Steels, Monel, K-Monel, Inconel, Bronze, Titanium, etc.).
    • Determine the optimal sequence of operations, select appropriate cutting tools and calculate speeds/feeds for various materials.
  • Prove out and Support: Lead “first-article” runs on the shop floor, trouble shooting programs in real-time and adjusting machine offsets to hit target tolerances.
