The Gas Designer II is responsible for supporting the development of construction‑ready and as‑built documents for natural gas transmission and distribution projects, with a primary focus on AVEVA operations. This position requires advanced proficiency with AVEVA, working knowledge of AutoCAD Plant 3D, a solid understanding of utility design standards, and the ability to independently complete increasingly complex design tasks.

Working as part of multidisciplinary project teams, Gas Designer II collaborates with senior designers, engineers, and project managers to produce accurate, high‑quality drawings and project deliverables that meet client, NV5, and industry requirements. This role is well‑suited for individuals who have strong drafting experience, growing technical judgment, and the ability to resolve routine design issues with minimal guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency using AVEVA to develop and modify 3D models, piping layouts, and associated design deliverables for gas transmission and distribution projects.
  • Utilize AutoCAD Plant 3D to support legacy model updates, data extraction, and coordination with AVEVA based deliverables when required.
  • Apply applicable drafting standards, line class requirements, and design guidelines to all AVEVA and Plant 3D work products.
  • Develop piping layouts and system configurations for pipelines, MLV stations, valve automation, and pig launcher/receiver facilities.
  • Generate and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs) and model based data from AVEVA and Plant 3D models.
  • Create and update as built drawings based on field markups, survey data, and record documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineers, designers, and project managers to resolve model discrepancies, design conflicts, and field issues.
  • Support design reviews, scorecard evaluations, and comment resolution related to AVEVA and Plant 3D deliverables.
  • Perform self checks and participate in QA/QC reviews to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project requirements.
  • Maintain accurate and organized design records, models, and project documentation.
  • Support multiple concurrent projects and manage time efficiently to meet project schedules.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 years of experience using AutoCAD, Civil 3D, AutoCAD Plant 3D, AVEVA, or related design platforms.
  • At least 2 years of direct experience working in the SoCalGas AVEVA environment.
  • Familiarity with SoCalGas drafting standards, Design Instruction Bulletins (DIBs), and AVEVA‑related workflows.
  •  Associate’s degree in engineering, Architectural Technology, Mechanical/Electrical Technology, Design, or a related discipline.
  • Working knowledge of utility design and construction standards applicable to gas transmission and distribution projects.
  • 4–6 years of combined experience in civil drafting, design drawing, and utility‑related design work.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 3 years of direct drafting and design experience in gas transmission or distribution systems.
  • Working knowledge of utility safe‑work practices.
  • Proficiency with additional design programs or platforms.

Metrics:

  • Performance will be evaluated based on timely and accurate completion of project work, adherence to standards, and support of team development.
  • Participation in training, seminars, and educational opportunities is encouraged to support continuous professional development.
