We’re hiring regular full-time Anaesthesia Assistants at St. Paul’s Hospital! This is your chance to take the next step in your career by working closely with Anaesthesiologists to support patients during critical moments of their care.

At Providence Health Care, our Anaesthesia Assistants are highly trained allied health professionals dedicated to patient safety and enhancing efficiency in perioperative services. With advanced skills and the ability to adapt quickly, they play a vital role within the anesthesia care team—collaborating with anesthesiologists, nurses, surgeons, and other healthcare professionals to ensure smooth and effective perioperative care.

  • Provide clinical support to anesthesiologists in the OR and satellite areas (e.g., GI Clinic, Cath Lab, ECT, Pain Clinic, Nerve Block rooms).
  • Perform pre-operative assessments, prepare medications and equipment, and assist with patient management plans.
  • Assist with induction and intraoperative care, including airway management, invasive lines, ventilation, medication administration, and hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Deliver procedural sedation and support regional anesthesia to enhance patient recovery and surgical efficiency.

What You Bring

Education

  • Completion of an accredited post-graduate Anaesthesia Assistant Program.
  • Three (3) years' recent, related clinical care experience, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Eligibility for registration with the Canadian Society of Respiratory Therapists (CSRT) or eligibility for membership with the Canadian Anaesthesiologists' Society (CAS).

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of anaesthesia theory, CAS guidelines, and clinical practice.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to assess patient responses and respond appropriately.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and critical decision-making.
  • Familiarity with research methods and medical equipment use.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Experience teaching students.
  • CPR certified and physically able to perform required duties.
  • Proficient in operating relevant medical equipment.

Your Day to Day:

  • Prepare patients for surgery by providing pre-op support and collaborating on anesthetic plans with the Anaesthesiologist.
  • Conduct pre- and post-op assessments, including airway and anesthetic risk evaluations, and update the care team.
  • Prepare, test, maintain, and troubleshoot anesthesia equipment to ensure safe operation.
  • Assist with anesthesia induction, airway management, ventilation, line insertions, regional blocks, and patient monitoring.
  • Administer medications under supervision, monitor vital signs, and document anesthesia data accurately.
  • Support patient emergence from anesthesia and assist with safe transport to recovery.
  • Participate in emergency response teams providing critical airway and circulatory support.
  • Manage anesthesia supplies, coordinate restocking, and maintain equipment inventory.
  • Teach and evaluate students, guiding their clinical training.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge and follow infection control practices.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
