About this role

Overview

The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and implementing the Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities communication strategy. The Communication Manager is the liaison to Lurie Children’s Marketing, Communication and Public Relations teams and collaborates across community health programs to cultivate and support messaging. This individual is the lead writer and is responsible for the Magoon Institute’s web site, social media and publications. This position provides communication support to ensure success of Magoon Institute’s annual goals and Lurie Children’s community health strategy and organizational mission.

 

The Patrick M. Magoon Institute for Healthy Communities serves as the hub for all community-focused initiatives at Lurie Children’s. The Magoon Institute is responsible for aligning the Medical Center’s clinical, research, education and advocacy expertise with community engagement, supporting people, programs and partnerships that advance community health. This team provides engagement opportunities for employees, physicians and trainees and leads the development and execution of Lurie Children’s Community Health Needs Assessment and Implementation Strategy. The Magoon Institute partners with clinical, public health and community outreach leaders and experts across the Medical Center to work towards the goal of advancing health equity and racial justice, and improving health and wellness for children, adolescents and their families across Chicago.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications, social media and marketing strategy with corresponding annual goals to advance the Magoon Institute’s mission, disseminate information about Lurie Children’s community health initiatives and advance opportunities for collaboration and fundraising.
  • Manage and maintain Magoon Institute communications, website, email marketing, social media and other marketing platforms and communications vehicles.
  • Develop and distribute media releases, health information, fact sheets, brochures and promotional materials, blogs, public health campaigns, community voice stories, and other content
  • Provide writing support, copy review and editing for grant proposals, stewardship and funder reporting, annual community benefit reports, triennial community needs assessment and implementation strategy, presentations and talking points, project summaries and reports, abstracts, academic manuscripts and other publications.
  • Design and format marketing and presentation collaterals adhering to hospital style and branding guidelines
  • Collaborate with Lurie Children’s Marketing and Communication teams to develop and execute communications and social media plans for the Magoon Institute that align with Lurie Children’s overall communication strategy.
  • Partner with community health programs to support their communication plans and ensure messaging alignment.
  • Work with and support efforts of Lurie Children’s Public Relations team to proactively develop and pitch stories related to community health efforts to various media, and cultivate relationships with community partners that result in earned media and digital placements.

  • Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, Health Communications or related field required. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be considered in lieu of the degree when the experience has been directly related to the duties of the job.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in communications, marketing, health communications, media or public relations with progressive project management experience required. Experience in community health preferred.
  • Prior experience providing publicity support for initiatives and events (news release, working with media and photographers) and healthcare/hospital experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of the workings of publications (e.g. writing, design, production, distribution), web content management, email marketing and web-based communications, social media and traditional media.
  • Exceptional analytical, interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including demonstrated ability to communicate clearly with expert and lay audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand, narrate and contextualize complex public health, community health and overall project information in a compelling and accurate manner for range of purposes and audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on complex issues and manage multiply projects.
  • Ability to collaborate with individuals from different backgrounds and disciplines.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and be self-directed.
