Within the context of a client and family centered care model and in accordance with established standards of professional practice, and the vision and values of the organization, works in a team based environment, assesses, diagnoses and treats the full range of communication and swallowing disorders for adult clients in home, facilities, community or clinic settings. Completes client reports, educates client/family, provides counseling and consultation, and presents lectures. Participates in interdisciplinary team meetings, risk management and research, and provides orientation to new team members and Speech-Language Pathology students.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Current full registration as a Speech Language Pathologist with the College of Health and Care Professionals of BC (CHCPBC).
  • Two (2) years recent related speech language practice dealing with adults with acquired communication disorders and dysphagia, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Broad knowledge of evidence based practice.
  • Broad knowledge of other health disciplines and their role in healthcare. Broad knowledge of research process and methodology.
  • Sound knowledge base of neurological conditions, complex chronic diseases and acquired brain injury management.
  • Basic knowledge of adult education principles, methods and tools.
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and influence group and inter-group processes, decision making and problem solving.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish rapport with clients and families in order to explore issues that are beyond the initial presented concerns.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with clients, families, team members, other groups and community agency personnel.
  • Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with conflict situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Demonstrated ability to operate related computer equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to determine and deal effectively with urgent situations, clients/families/residents. Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver presentations.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective consultation.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other healthcare professionals.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
  • Skilled in the use of equipment, and in the techniques appropriate for treatment.

The hours of work including days off and work area may be subject to change consistent with operational requirements and the provision of the Collective Agreement and applicable statutes. Collecting these records will allow for offering of any missing vaccines, and for appropriate actions to be taken in the event of any future exposure to a communicable disease or during outbreaks.
