About this role

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are seeking a Structural Engineer to join our team supporting the DOE's Y-12 National Security Complex! This position is full-time and will be based out of Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Responsibilities

  • Develop high quality detailed design packages, provide engineering procurement and field technical support to implement those designs, and provide expertise for troubleshooting and technical assessments of plant facilities.

  • Preparation of conceptual engineering deliverables such as cost-estimating bills of material and man-hour estimates, statements of work, design criteria, and design engineering deliverables.

  • Work as a team member of an integrated project team, or as a technical lead for a multi-discipline task and routinely provide input to system engineers and other plant customers.

  • Perform walkdowns in the existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.

  • Provide technical expertise and wide application of technical principles, theories, and concepts in the field of Structural Engineering.

  • Provide self-performed technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems through the application of established engineering practices, codes, and standards.

  • Responsibilities will include but not be limited to building evaluations and modifications, seismic analysis and rehab, oversight of outside engineering firms, steel and concrete design, and machine installations.

  • Proficient with developing structural drawings (plans, sections and details) for various materials of construction (steel, concrete, cold-formed steel), structural calculations, equipment anchorage, report preparation, drafting (or oversight of drafting), and preparation of construction specifications (generally in the form of general notes on the drawings).

  • Familiar with consensus design codes.

  • Able to plan, self-perform, and/or direct all engineering design team activities on a project which include but are not limited to: development of detailed project scope, design time-lines, functions and requirements, design basis and criteria, design scheduled and tracking, project engineering budget, calculations, drawing generation, research, design review, inter-discipline design coordination, design approval, design change control, specifications, approval of contractor technical and material submittals and field verification of construction compliance to design.

Requirements

  • Education & Years of Experience – Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from an ABET accredited school and 10+ years of relevant experience.

  • Citizenship – To be considered, you must be a United States (U.S.) citizen due to the federal nature of the work.

  • Clearance – To be considered, you must be able to obtain and maintain a government issued clearance, if needed.

  • Requires strong verbal and written communication skills and the ability interface effectively with various clients, production and support organizations, management, and hourly wage employees.

  • Must be familiar with consensus design codes.

  • Must be willing to work in a production environment.

  • Experience performing walkdowns in the existing plant facilities to generate design documents and provide field support to craft personnel.

Desired Skills

  • An active professional engineering (PE) license is preferred.

  • CAD drafting experience not required but preferred, along with any 3D modeling experience.

  • Structural modeling experience with STAAD Pro is also preferred.

About the Site

The NNSA's Y-12 National Security Complex, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, is the nation’s only source of enriched uranium nuclear weapon components and provides enriched uranium for the U.S. Navy as well as excels in materials science, precision manufacturing, and stores enriched uranium. Y-12 supports efforts to reduce nuclear proliferation risk and performs work for other government agencies (energy.gov).
