About this role

About DataStealth:

DataStealth is a single, unified data security platform (DSP) that discovers, classifies, and protects sensitive data across your entire environment, from on-premise to legacy cloud to cloud; wherever your data lives or flows, we protect it. We do this without requiring complex integrations or changes to your existing applications, ensuring security that enables, rather than hinders, your business. By seamlessly applying data protection strategies, such as tokenization, we ensure that even if your perimeter is breached, your data remains unusable if it falls into the wrong hands.

Recognized for the fifth consecutive year as a Great Place to Work, we are one of the world’s leading and fastest growing cybersecurity software companies. Our team is the best in the business. Our patented technology provides our large enterprise customers with the ability to solve complex data security problems with a paradigm shifting technology that can actually solve problems.

About You:

You are a hands-on engineering leader who excels at building and scaling high-performing teams while maintaining strong technical depth. You balance people leadership with delivery, ensuring secure, well-architected software is built efficiently and at scale.

You thrive in fast-paced environments, collaborate closely with product, security, and leadership, and translate complex requirements into clear execution plans. You lead with empathy and accountability, investing in hiring, growth, and team health, while staying current with modern engineering practices and evolving security challenges. You are motivated by building technology that protects critical data without slowing the business.

Role Overview:

DataStealth is seeking an experienced Director of Engineering to lead and scale our engineering organization as we build and deliver a next-generation Data Security Platform for enterprise customers.

This role is both technical and people-centric. You will be accountable not only for software delivery, but also for establishing strong human-capital practices across engineering projects, including hiring, onboarding, performance management, career development, and team health. As a growing software startup, we expect this role to actively shape how engineering teams operate, grow, and perform at scale.

You will work closely with product, security, and leadership to ensure that the right people are working on the right initiatives, in the right way, to achieve consistent, high-quality outcomes.

Key Responsibilities:

Engineering Leadership & Delivery

  • Lead multiple engineers across one or more concurrent projects, ensuring predictable, high-quality delivery from design through deployment.

  • Own execution across the full development lifecycle, balancing technical excellence, delivery speed, and operational stability.

  • Partner with Product/Architecture/Infra-Operations to translate business and security requirements into clear technical plans, milestones, and outcomes.

  • Ensure engineering best practices are consistently applied, including code quality, testing, documentation, and secure development standards.

People Leadership & Human Capital Management

  • Serve as the primary people leader for your team(s), with full accountability for performance, engagement, and growth.

  • Establish and maintain clear role expectations, performance standards, and success metrics across engineering projects.

  • Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and feedback cycles focused on both results and professional development.

  • Identify skill gaps, succession risks, and growth opportunities, and proactively address them through coaching, training, or hiring.

  • Support recruiting efforts by defining role requirements, participating in interviews, and ensuring strong hiring decisions aligned with DataStealth’s standards and culture.

  • Drive effective onboarding and ramp-up processes to ensure new engineers become productive quickly and consistently.

Cross-Project Resource & Capacity Management

  • Allocate engineering resources across projects/teams based on priorities, skills, and capacity, adjusting as business needs evolve.

  • Identify delivery risks related to staffing, workload, or burnout, and proactively address them.

  • Partner with leadership to forecast hiring needs and support scalable team growth.

Culture, Process & Best Practices

  • Build and reinforce a culture of accountability, ownership, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.

  • Champion modern engineering and people-management best practices suitable for a fast-growing software startup.

  • Promote collaboration and open communication across teams.

  • Continuously assess and improve engineering processes, tooling, and team workflows.

Continuous Improvement & Industry Awareness

  • Stay current with industry trends in software engineering, people leadership, and security-focused development.

  • Introduce new practices or tools that improve productivity, quality, or team effectiveness.

  • Act as a role model for leadership, professionalism, and technical curiosity.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field preferred

  • Proven experience (minimum 4 years) in a software engineering people leadership role, having led at least 2 small teams with 4-8 members on each one.

  • Expertise in clean, efficient and structured programming for top-notch performance with a track record of successfully delivering complex software projects

  • Strong technical background in software development, with proficiency in languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, etc.

  • Experience with Agile methodologies, DevOps practices, and CI/CD pipelines

  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams

  • Demonstrated leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team towards achieving common goals

  • Experience working in the cybersecurity or data security industry is a plus
