About this role

Job Purpose:

Under the direction of the English Bay Community Center Manager, the Horticultural Technician is responsible for the daily care, maintenance, and upkeep of the greenhouse facility, community gardens and fruit orchard. This role ensures optimal growing conditions are maintained and that the facility operates safely and efficiently. 

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facility Maintenance: Ensure the greenhouse structure, walkways, and workspaces are kept clean, organized, and free of hazards.
  • Plant Care & Upkeep: Assist with routine watering, fertilizing, pruning, and general health monitoring of greenhouse vegetation, community garden and Orchard trees.
  • Climate Management: Monitor and report on greenhouse temperature, humidity, and ventilation systems, making minor adjustments as directed.
  • Equipment Upkeep: Safely operate and maintain basic gardening tools and greenhouse equipment, monitor irrigation and soil moisture levels.
  • Inventory & Documentation: Track basic supply levels (soil, fertilizer, pots) and report requirements to the Department Manager.
  • Compliance: Adhere strictly to occupational health and safety protocols and operational guidelines.



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Previous experience in landscaping, horticulture, agriculture, or general facility maintenance is highly preferred.
  • Ability to perform physical labor, including lifting up to 50 lbs, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working in a humid, warm greenhouse environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • A strong commitment to safety and reliability.

 

Working Conditions and/or Physical Requirements:

  • Outdoor environment. Monday to Thursday 8:30am – 4:30pm, Friday 8:30am – 2:00pm.
  • Working hours can vary and may require a flexible schedule depending on type of assignment or work plan task.
  • Evening and weekend work may be required to attend meetings, events, and community engagement sessions.
