Position SummaryĀ 

TheĀ Vice President,Ā PeopleĀ and CultureĀ servesĀ as the senior leader responsible for shaping and executing the organization’sĀ people strategyĀ and overseeingĀ allĀ human resourcesĀ functions. This roleĀ serves as a strategic leader within the organization andĀ oversees itsĀ talent acquisition,Ā human capital management and development,Ā employeeĀ experience andĀ engagement,Ā andĀ human resourcesĀ compliance,Ā ensuring alignmentĀ of these functionsĀ withĀ AU’sĀ mission, values, andĀ long‑termĀ goals. The Vice President ofĀ PeopleĀ and CultureĀ is a key member of theĀ seniorĀ team and aĀ critical source of support to staff at all levels of the organization. TheyĀ supervise the Human Resources and Finance Associate andĀ report to the Chief Operating Officer.Ā The position is based in Washington, DC,Ā andĀ requiresĀ workingĀ from theĀ AUĀ office at least once per week.Ā

Essential Duties & Responsibilities  



Strategic LeadershipĀ 

  • Lead the development and execution of a comprehensiveĀ people strategyĀ that supports organizational growth, talent development,Ā andĀ the implementation ofĀ core organizational values.Ā 
  • Serve as a trusted advisor toĀ senior leadership on ensuring internal processes are well-planned and effectively communicated.Ā Ā 
  • Serve as a thought leader for organizational equityĀ and accessibility, ensuring that equityĀ and accessibilityĀ considerations are embedded into all organizational policies and practices.Ā 
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures related to human resource functions as needed.Ā Ā Ā 



Talent Acquisition Ā 

  • Oversee recruitment strategies to attractĀ mission‑aligned,Ā high‑performingĀ staff.Ā 
  • DevelopĀ andĀ oversee the implementation ofĀ strategies to attract, hire, andĀ retainĀ a diverse workforce.Ā 
  • SupportĀ hiring managers as needed in the recruitment andĀ selectionĀ of top talent.Ā Ā 



Human Capital ManagementĀ and DevelopmentĀ Ā 

  • Recommend learning and development programs and initiatives that provide internalĀ 

development opportunities for employees.Ā 

  • Lead the performance review process,Ā including annual reviews, growth development plans, and feedback mechanisms with clear deliverables and timelines.Ā 
  • Provide support onĀ conflict resolution, coaching, and performance improvement processes.Ā 
  • Own the organization’s goal-setting process, partnering with leadership to cascade; ensureĀ individualĀ goal-settingĀ is meaningful and tied toĀ department and organizational goals.Ā Ā 
  • Support supervisors in resolvingĀ employee relations issues, ensuring consistency and equity in administering policies and procedures.Ā Ā 


Employee ExperienceĀ and EngagementĀ 

  • Implement and support data-driven approaches to measure and improve employee engagement, job satisfaction, organizational culture enhancement strategies and tactics, and best practices for retention.Ā 
  • Oversee employee engagement programming (i.e.Ā staff retreats, virtual gatherings) that foster a sense of belonging, well-being, and continuous learning.Ā 
  • DriveĀ the organization’sĀ initiatives relatedĀ to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility,Ā ensuringĀ continuous learning and alignment between these principles and employee experience.Ā 



HR Operations & ComplianceĀ 

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, nonprofit regulations, and internal policies.Ā 
  • MaintainĀ accurateĀ human resourcesĀ systems andĀ ensureĀ timelyĀ reporting.Ā 
  • Respond to data and information requests from AU’s employee union and ensureĀ thatĀ allĀ human resourcesĀ processes align with the guidelines outlined in the Collective Bargaining Agreement.Ā Ā 
  • Maintain knowledge of employment law and human resourcesĀ best practices;Ā lead annual update ofĀ theĀ Employee Handbook.Ā

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent andĀ 12+ years ofĀ relatedĀ experience, ideally including nonprofit orĀ mission‑drivenĀ environments.Ā Ā 
  • SHRM or comparable HR certification.Ā

  • Demonstrated experience navigatingĀ sensitive organizational issuesĀ with strong ethical judgment, discretion, and the ability toĀ maintainĀ confidentiality.Ā Ā

Working Conditions & Physical RequirementsĀ 

This is a hybrid position that primarily involves working from a home office and/or professional office environment. The role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and video conferencing tools. It requires the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods, communicate effectively, and occasionally move about within the workspace.Ā

Compensation and Benefits  

The salary range for this position isĀ $175,650-$208,575.Ā This stated range includes a 5% locality pay adjustment for the Washington, DC metropolitan area. The successful candidate’s placement within that range will be consistent withĀ AU’s compensation framework, which is based on role placement and years of related experience.Ā
