Job Description

The Opportunity

Implement district school health programs and provide direct services to meet the needs of the students at their campus and staff under the supervision of the Director of School Health Services.

Key Responsibilities
Nursing Services
 Provide direct patient care for first aid, urgent, and emergent care to students, staff, and visitors.
 Able to provide care in a high paced environment serving one to four schools on a campus.
 Administer daily and emergency medications to students according to board policy and physician orders.
 Administer medical treatments to students according to physician orders and board policy such as gastrostomy tube feedings, urinary catheterizations, tracheostomy care and suction, and ostomy care.
 Collect and update student immunizations in the student information system.
 Conduct state mandated screening programs and complete documentation.
 Implement and/or update Individualized Health care Plans.
 Collaborate with principals, school counselors, teachers, parents, food service, and others regarding student needs with health conditions.
 Collaborate with parents and physicians regarding student health care required during school hours.
 Participate in Admission, Review, and Dismissal Committee (ARD) meetings of students with health needs.
 Collaborate with Special Education Department and 504 coordinators regarding implementation of health-related care to students with an Individual Education Plan (IEP).
 Inform and train teachers with a need-to-know status of students with chronic health conditions.
 Document all student illnesses, injuries, medications and interactions in the student information system.
 Must always provide student privacy and confidentiality when providing care to students, staff, and visitors.
 Provide training to faculty/staff as needed on health-related topics as needed.
 Train unlicensed staff on health-related tasks as directed by the School Health Services.
 Registered Nurses will follow-up with physicians to clarify orders for medications, procedures, and treatments for students that are required during school hours.
 Registered Nurses will initiate care plans and emergency care plans.
 Registered Nurses may attend ARDs for clinic coordinators support to interpret health care needs of students needed during school hours.

Clerical

 Maintain accurate student health records (immunizations, medications, state mandated screenings).
 Compile, maintain, and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and documents on all students.

Compliance
 Comply with policies established by federal and state laws, Texas Department of State Health Services, Texas Education Agency, and KIPP board policy.
 Maintain confidentiality.

Professional Development:
 Maintain certification in CPR and First Aid, Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis screening certification.
 Model behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.

Qualifications

Qualifications
Education/Certification
 Completion/Graduation from accredited RN or LVN program
 Valid Texas license issued by the related Board of Nurse Examiners
 Must have an active RN or LVN license in Texas

Special Knowledge/Skills
 Must be able to use critical thinking skills when triaging students, staff, and visitors and be able to respond in an emergency.
 Experience in providing care to patients with a history of seizures and providing rescue care post seizure.
 Have knowledge and experience of caring for patients with diabetes, giving insulin, and giving rescue medication.
 Have knowledge and experience of caring for patients with gastrostomy tube feedings and care.
 Have knowledge and experience of caring for patients with a tracheostomy and suctioning.
 Have knowledge and experience of caring for a patient needing to have urinary catheterization.
 Must have knowledge and experience in following physician orders to administer medications by Oral, Sublingual, Buccal, Rectal, Intramuscular, and Subcutaneous Routes.
 Knowledge of basic first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR /First Aid/Healthcare Provider)
 Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
 Proficient in keyboarding skills
 Ability to use personal computer and software to enter data and do word processing
 Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written)

 Able to walk, run, and bend
 Able to pick up 20 lbs.
 

Experience
 Minimum one year’s experience in direct patient care in a hospital or a long care facility as a licensed RN or LVN.
 Pediatric experience is preferred but not required.
