Job Description

The Bus Monitor plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students during transportation to and from school. This position involves supervising student behavior on the bus, assisting with boarding and disembarking, and communicating effectively with the bus driver and school staff to maintain a secure and orderly environment.​

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor student behavior on the bus to ensure compliance with safety rules and school policies; address and report any disciplinary issues or concerns to the appropriate school personnel.
  • Assist students with boarding and exiting the bus safely, including those with special needs; ensure that all students are seated and using seat belts if available before the bus moves.
  • Maintain open and effective communication with the bus driver regarding any incidents or concerns; report any safety hazards or mechanical issues observed on the bus to the Transportation Coordinator.
  • Be familiar with emergency evacuation procedures and assist in drills and actual emergencies; provide first aid assistance as needed, and contact emergency services in case of serious incidents.
  • Adhere to all KIPP Deltaβ€˜s transportation policies and procedures; promptly complete and submit incident reports and other required documentation.

This description outlines the position's primary duties; however, bus monitors may be required to perform other job-related tasks as directed by a supervisor to ensure smooth school operations.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
Licensure: First Aid and CPR certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire.
Experience: Previous experience working with children or in a school setting is advantageous.

  • Must pass state and federal background checks, including fingerprinting and child maltreatment registry checks.
  • Ongoing participation in professional development activities as required by ADE.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; dependable and punctual.Β 
  • Must respond quickly to emergencies and remain calm and assertive in stressful situations.
  • Ability to assist students in boarding and exiting the bus may involve bending, lifting, and guiding.
  • Capable of sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods.

Work Environment
Work is primarily conducted on school buses during student transportation times. The Bus Monitor may be exposed to varying weather conditions and must be prepared to handle a range of student behaviors.​

Compensation
Bus Monitor wages will be based on individual experience and within the SY 2025-26 Salary ScheduleΒ range.
