New Zealand needs to build a skilled workforce and ATNZ are currently looking for mechanically minded individuals who want to start a career in General Engineering. We are recruiting a General Engineering Apprentice for our host company located in Napier.
If successful you will be employed by ATNZ and assigned to this host company where you will receive valuable on-the-job training while studying to become a fully qualified engineer.
What does a General Engineering Apprentice do?
General engineers have broad skills and knowledge of welding, fabrication, machining, and fitting. Their work includes:
- Fitting and assembly.
- Machine shop.
- Service and repair.
- Manufacturing.
- General fabrication of machines and equipment, including hydraulics and pneumatics.
About the Host Company:
Our host company is a Hawke's Bay based engineering firm with a remarkable history spanning almost 150 years. Specialising in light to medium sized engineering projects, they have built a strong reputation for quality and reliability that has stood the test of time.
Their core business is designing and building meat and by-products processing plants and equipment, and they manufacture and refurbish a wide range of processing machinery for the meat and by-products industries. Beyond this, their teams carry out marine maintenance, equipment maintenance, and site installation work, all supported by a comprehensive machine shop that includes some of New Zealand's largest lathes and boring mills.
They are SiteWise accredited and operate out of a modern workshop facility, well equipped to handle a diverse range of fabrication projects including tanks and pressure vessels up to 5 metres in diameter.
This is a company with deep roots in New Zealand's engineering industry and a wealth of hands-on expertise. For an apprentice, it's a fantastic opportunity to develop real skills across a broad range of engineering disciplines, working on meaningful projects alongside an experienced and knowledgeable team.

How long does an apprenticeship take to complete?
3 – 4 years. This may be shorter if you have completed a level 3 pre-trade qualification.
How much do apprenticeships pay?
Compensation varies by host company, but most apprentices earn $41,000–$52,000 annually, depending on skill level and the company’s financial capacity.
Is there an upper age limit for apprenticeships?
None. Anyone aged 16 or over with the right to permanently live and work in New Zealand is allowed to undertake an apprenticeship.
Do I need my own tools?
Some companies provide tools, while others require you to have your own. It is always good to build a supply of your own for the future.

What qualifications do I need to get an ATNZ apprenticeship?
No qualifications are necessary. We are looking for people with a great attitude and a good work ethic who want to be hands-on and earn something they are passionate about.
Are there any fees for being an ATNZ apprentice?
Whether you are employed by ATNZ or do your apprenticeship through your current employer, apprentices pay no fees.
What happens if my host company does not have enough work for me?
Another advantage of being employed directly by ATNZ is that if your host company can't continue employing you for whatever reason, we will do our best to place you with another host company.
