About this role
The KTC Wildland–Urban Interface (WUI) Team is seeking motivated, physically capable individuals to join a highly skilled, professional firefighting and training group dedicated to protecting communities from wildfire. This role is ideal for individuals who want meaningful, hands-on work in dynamic environments, value teamwork and leadership, and are committed to wildfire preparedness, mitigation, and response.
This position goes beyond traditional wildfire suppression. Members of the KTC WUI Team play a vital role in community protection, emergency response, mitigation operations, and wildfire education. You will work on the front lines of wildfire incidents, deploy throughout the province, support communities before, during, and after wildfire events, and help train firefighters and community members in WUI best practices.
Working from the Loon River WUI office, as a WUI Firefighter, you will be a member of a professional WUI team specializing in Wildland – Urban Interface operations. The role combines operational fire suppression duties with prevention, mitigation and instructional responsibilities.
Skills & Abilities
- Respond to wildfires as part of a coordinated WUI engine crew
- Protect homes, communities and critical infrastructure within the WUI
- Conduct structure protection, triage and ignition-prevention activities
- Install, operate and maintain sprinkler protection systems
- Deploy pumps, hoses, engines, chainsaws and hand tools
- Participate in extended wildfire deployments (14-21 days)
- Deliver WUI and mitigation training
- Support instructional activities during courses and exercises
- Participate in regular training and physical conditioning.
Qualifications:
- A pre-employment fitness qualification test to Alberta Wildfire Level 1 fitness test standard.
- Ability to deploy for extended assignments.
- Commitment to safety and teamwork.
- Must have a valid class 5 license with a clean drivers
- NFPA 1001 Firefighter Levels I & II
- WUI Mitigation (WUI-M)
- Hinton Training Centre Certifications
Conditions of Employment:
- Shift Rotation - 15 days on 6 days off.
- RCMP/Police Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector submitted prior to commencement of employment.
- Must sign a confidentiality agreement.
