About this role

Position Summary

Working under the supervision of the Middle Years and Childcare Services Team Lead, the Assistant will actively instruct and participate in a variety of physical activities designed to engage students in fun, recreational experiences that support lifelong learning. In addition to promoting physical activity, the Assistant will help facilitate programs that encourage healthy eating, personal development, and overall wellness, while fostering positive relationships with children and families in the community.



This position works Monday - Friday, 2pm-5pm during the school year with the potential to have more hours during the summer program, pro-d days and school closures. 


What You'll Do

  • Provide a healthy snack to all participants within the program guidelines accommodating all dietary restrictions.
  • May be required to prepare snack ensuring dishes are washed afterwards as needed.
  • Respond to the individual needs of children and establish stable and consistent relationships with each child and their families/caregivers.
  • Foster self-esteem, problem solving and conflict resolution skills in the children.
  • Supervise the children and guide them in their physical, social, and emotional development.
  • Watch for signs of emotional or developmental problems in children and bring the problems to the attention of 
    parents.
  • Provide positive role-modeling for child participants and volunteers to the program.
  • Ensure that the health and safety needs of the children are met, and all health and safety issues are dealt with 
    immediately and appropriately.
  • Ensure the program is varied and of interest to the children.
  • Report on a regular basis to Program Lead regarding issues of need and/or concern.
  • Cleaning and tidying of the facility and ensuring the safe storage of equipment.
  • Carry out housekeeping duties as required.
  • Ensure program materials and activities reflect cultural variance of program population.
  • Always be polite and helpful, smiling and greeting both parents and children as they come and go.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of information obtained during professional dealings with children and families.
  • Respect cultural and social differences and allow for different parenting styles and values.
  • Ensure any suspected illness or disease is reported to the Program Lead.
  • Administer First Aid and initiate the appropriate emergency response as required.

  • Additional responsibilities as needed to support the community and uphold our shared values.


Working / Special Conditions

  • Initial and ongoing employment is subject to submission of a clear Criminal Record Review Program Check to ensure the safety and trust of the communities we serve. This check will be conducted every five years.
  • Initial and ongoing commitment to the values and guidelines of Sq'éwqel (Seabird Island Band), including our policies, procedures, standards of practice, and laws, is essential. This commitment supports our collective work, the community, and the responsibilities of this role.


What You Bring

  • Responsible Adult Certificate is required (or willingness to obtain). 
  • First Aid Level 1 
  • Food safe Level 1
  • Experience working with kids or in a childcare setting is preferred. 
  • Proficient communication (written and verbal) skills.
  • Experience working with First Nations community is considered an asset.

  • Indigenous candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Knowledge and understanding of Seabird Island’s culture, traditions, teachings, community dynamics.
  • Ability to respond quickly and professionally to community or colleague needs and inquiries.

  • Experience working within Indigenous communities and applying culturally safe practices.
  • Understanding of intergenerational trauma and its impacts on Indigenous peoples and communities.
