About this role

HEAD LIFEGUARD

Shawnigan Lake School is looking to a Head Lifeguard to assist us in keeping our guests safe

at our lakefront facility this June, July and August.

The Head Lifeguard, in addition to lifeguarding our waterfront, provides shift supervision of Lifeguards, lifeguard scheduling, onsite training, and performs basic administrative functions relating to the lifeguarding team. This is a leadership position providing on-dock direction and support to lifeguards by monitoring work and ensuring established standards are met.

 

This role will work approximately 30-40 hours per week during the summer, and shifts could vary including daytime, evening, weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays.

 

Wage: $32.00 TO $35.00 per hour (depending on experience, qualifications and internal parity).

 

Duties could include:

  • Provide leadership, direction, and supervision to a team of high performing Lifeguards.
  • Provides shift supervision for the delivery of aquatic programs that occur during the assigned schedule
  • Ensuring proper lifeguard procedures such as rotations, meal break allotments occur
  • Monitors and ensures the completion of daily tasks, shift duties, and record keeping.
  • Provides direction and feedback to staff
  • Ensures the facility is well maintained, clean, and safe on a daily basis and in accordance with BC Health Act. Liaises with facility maintenance and External Programs Manager.
  • Provides orientations, training, and mentoring to staff.
  • Liaises with general public to resolve customer problems and complaints.
  • Provides advice and guidance to Lifeguards in order to handle customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Performs administrative duties such as managing lifeguard staff scheduling, shift coverage, payroll submissions, checking log books and reviewing accident reports
  • Carries out lifeguarding duties by monitoring safety practices, Red Cross, Lifesaving Society, National Lifeguard Service, and Public Health Act Standards to ensure requirements are maintained
  • Surveillance: Maintain constant, active supervision of the water and dock area to identify hazards or distressed swimmers.
  • Emergency Response: Swiftly respond to emergencies, perform water rescues, and initiate CPR or first aid within the scope of certification.
  • Responsible for minor first aid related duties that may arise
  • Rule Enforcement: Warn swimmers of unsafe behavior and enforce all facility policies and regulations.
  • Work effectively as a team member with other lifeguards and Head Guard
  • Performs monitoring and reporting functions by advising supervisor of general equipment needs, monitors operating procedures and ensures standards are maintained, maintains records, log books, and submits reports as required
  • Facility Maintenance: check equipment, clean the dock deck, and ensure safety equipment is functional.
  • Performs other related duties as required.



We are looking for the following:

  • Must possess a current, valid National Lifeguard certification
  • Must possess a current, valid First Aid certificate with CPR “C”
  • Waterfront certification and experience lifeguarding in a open waterfront setting an asset
  • 2 -5 years experience in lifeguarding for varied ages
  • Experience in supervising a team of lifeguards
  • Knowledge of the BC Guidelines for Open Waterfront Operations
  • Excellent leadership skills in coordination, supervision, planning, and organizing of daily duties, shift tasks, and lifeguarding
  • Physical Fitness: Strong swimming ability and endurance
  • Alertness: High level of observation and ability to remain focused for long periods.
  • Judgment: Mature decision-making skills to manage stressful, high-pressure situations.
  • Responsible and observant, with the ability to enforce safe practices in a group setting
  • Demonstrable theory, practical skills and abilities related to water rescue, safety, and accident prevention
  • A team player who can work independently as well as under supervision
  • Strong customer service skills including the ability to de-escalate situations and deal with difficult customers and/or challenging situations involving members of the public.
  • Ability to work in a high energy, positive environment.
  • Great communication skills: verbally and in writing
  • Flexible availability and open to working daytime, evening, weekdays, weekends and statutory holidays
  • Experience working with children and teenagers an asset
