VICTORIA HARBOUR FERRY TROLLEY OPERATOR  – JOB DESCRIPTION

The Trolley Driver provides  service to Victoria Harbour Ferry passengers. The role is based on our commitment to safety (on and off the vehicle). Passenger service and attention to detail are supported by our motto – “Happy People in Happy Boats.” Operators must be qualified and ready to perform duties on any of our trolleys . A Harbour Ferry Operator is a dedicated, loyal, and self-motivated individual who works well in a disciplined, directed environment.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

As a Harbour Ferry Trolley Driver you will be required to:

  • Provide a high standard of safe vehicle operations and work cooperatively with the VHF team, to ensure that all safety protocols are always followed.
  • Operate the vehicle in the in compliance with regulations and in accordance with good practice.
  • Provide a pleasant and welcoming attitude to all passengers and staff.
  • Process ticket sales and maintain an accurate and complete record of passenger loads reported at the conclusion of each shift.
  • Work with Customer Service Representatives to coordinate the boarding of passengers.
  • Provide the Watch Leader with notice of incidents or situations that can impact safety or compromise our high level of customer care.
  • Once trained, the Operator must remain familiar with all VHFC processes and procedures, products, services and sales information.
  • The Operator reports directly to the Watch Leader on duty, and or the Trolley T1 (John Palmer)

 

QUALIFICATION AND REQUIREMENTS

To ensure that Victoria Harbour Ferry follows all government and safety requirements, it is necessary that you provide proof that you hold the following current certifications:

  • Be a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident
  • Hold a valid class 1 or 2 license with an air endorsement
  • Have the ability to understand, speak, read, and write English in order to learn the training materials, communicate effectively with customers, and write reports on incidents involving safety
  • Be willing to work various types of shifts
  • Be able to pass reference checks based on attendance and punctuality
  • Have basic computer and internet literacy in order to complete the mandatory training component

 







Driving Record Requirements

You must demonstrate a safe driving history to qualify for any position that involves the operation of a company vehicle. Your driving record in Canada or out of country over the past five years will be reviewed as part of the application process.

At the time of application, you must meet the following driving requirements:

  • No roadside suspensions or driving prohibitions in the past five years
  • No more than one violation (moving or non-moving) with a maximum of three points in the past three years
  • No more than one at-fault accident in the past three years
  • If you already have one violation, and/or one at-fault accident when you apply and you receive either an additional violation/at-fault accident or an outstanding violation/accident appears on your driving record during the recruitment process, your application will no longer be considered 

 

If you have held your BC license for less than five years and held a previous license from another province or country, you will be required to provide us with your driving records (driving abstract and insurance claims summary) to ensure you meet the minimum driving requirements.

  • Capable of processing ticket sales while inside the vehicle  using a digital handheld device.
  • Technical Skills – Able to understand and use software-based tools with ease.
  • Communication — Job requires the use of a personal email address for receiving corporate correspondence.

 

SCHEDULE AND HOURS OF WORK

  • Work is seasonal. The season for new operators will start in May and run through to the end of October.
  • Training for new operators  will run from mid May to end May  
  • Operators are required to work both day shifts and afternoon shifts (usually 8AM to 3 PM and 3 PM to 8 PM). Workdays are Monday to Sunday. Regularly scheduled shifts are 4 days on and 4 days off with alternating day and afternoon shifts.
  • Trolley operators will have a guarantee of 20hrs per week
  • Note: operators are asked to not take vacation time during the months of June, July, and August (peak of the season)

 

 

 

COMPENSATION

  • The position pays on an hourly basis (regular shifts and other duties). $25 per hour during training and $27 per hour afterwards. There is no overtime allowance other than Statutory Holiday Pay. Holiday pay is paid within each pay period.
  • Company uniforms are provided for this position.
