Nazarbayev University School of Medicine, established in 2015, is being developed in partnership with the University Of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and offers a US-style curriculum taught in English. NUSOM’s mission is to educate a new generation of clinically skilled and research-focused physicians prepared for leadership positions in research, education, and clinical care to improve the health of individuals in Kazakhstan, Central Asia, and around the world.

Job Description

1.      To administer and coordinate the technical activities of laboratory assistants and laboratory infrastructure;

2.      To develop and implement laboratory(s) policies and procedures. To manage and coordinate operational policies and procedures; to coordinate with research staff on issues that impact laboratory services;

3.      To maintain liaison with investigators, research personnel, and staff to solve specific operating problems and improve technical activities. To advise on technical procedures, techniques, and equipment, and maintain conformance with specific operational standards;

4.      To install and maintain laboratory equipment in compliance with national regulations. To develop and implement quality assurance programs relating to calibration and maintenance of equipment;

5.      To maintain quality checks on the safety of laboratories, including biohazards, and ensure maintenance of the facilities according to Good Laboratory Practices;

6.      To monitor all laboratory personnel for adherence to health and safety standards;

7.      To assure that the laboratory personnel are properly trained in Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and equipment specific requirements;

8.      To oversee inventory and supervise the distribution of lab supplies to investigators to fulfill individual requests. To monitor and replenish inventory, when needed;

9.      To direct and supervise the training of new employees and investigators in laboratory procedures. This includes undergraduate volunteers, technicians, and post-doctoral fellows;

10.  To be responsible for the financial management of lab, to develop lab budgets, analyze trends, produce reports;

11.  To perform specialized experiments with a high level of independence. To contribute ideas and suggestions for improvements in experimental protocols and techniques. To create new protocols as needed.

Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Biomedicine, Microbiology, Animal Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Biotechnology, or related field is a minimum requirement.

A minimum of 5-7 years of progressively more responsible experience in a research-related fields required

Proficient wet lab bench skills preferred.

Prior supervisory experience required.

Fluency in Kazakh, Russian, and English (oral and writing skills).

Advanced MS Office experience
