Job Description

Ross University School of Medicine, located in Bridgetown, Barbados, invites applications for faculty in Community Medicine and Global Health in the Office of External Affairs. The academic center has facilities in the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Center, located in the city of Bridgetown.

We are looking for a dynamic, adaptive, educator who values interdisciplinary collaboration, innovative pedagogy and community partnership. The Community Medicine and Global Health (CMGH) faculty has the primary responsibility of teaching and supervision of students in the community medicine thread of the MD curriculum.

The office of External affairs oversees, and drives change in the areas of Community Engagement, Community Academic affairs, and the Community Medicine and Global Health Program. This faculty member has the responsibility to support the mission of the Community Medicine & Global health program at RUSM and contributes to program and curriculum development as well as engage in field work and course instruction, inter-professional collaboration, and program management and evaluation.

The emphasis is on providing students with high quality educational content and experiences, while developing patient centric humanistic future physicians with a scholarly mind set. We uphold an ethos of developing responsible partnerships with communities where RUSM students live, study, and serve, while training students to address health inequities in a diverse environment.

The position reports to the Senior Associate Dean of External Affairs

Responsibilities

Curriculum development and Teaching

  • Engage in curriculum design, delivery and continuous quality improvement within the Community Medicine and Global Health program (CMGH) program to fulfill the objectives of the program across the spectrum of education, clinical experiences, and research program activities
  • Participate in overall curriculum planning, development and delivery highlighting integration with CMGH
  • Prepare course material for CMGH
  • Mentor junior colleagues and teaching fellows if applicable
  • Participate in curriculum integration and innovation initiatives across RUSM
  • Deliver effective interactive lectures and workshops (Enhancement and Fusion sessions).
  • Write, review and revise (as needed) examination questions to assess students’ knowledge and proficiency on CMGH content
  • Prepare, administer, and grade assignments on CMGH content
  • Provide summative and formative assessment of student performance in various activities within CMGH
  • Actively participate in relevant professional activities in order to improve teaching and subject matter competence
  • Analyze student feedback from CCEs to ensure quality improvement

Community clinical experiences

  • Supervision of clinical site operations and Community clinical experiences
  • Serving as preceptor for Community clinical experiences
  • Collaborate with community partners in the development of new community experiences.

Research and Scholarly Activity

  • Engage in the supervision of students within the various elements of CMGH and research activities
  • Help cover the work of the Office of External Affairs department in a cooperative and collegial fashion
  • Provide leadership and supervision of student research within the Community Medicine and Global health program
  • Provide research advice to students at RUSM
  • Develop and engage in initiatives to promote research opportunities for students and faculty
  • Prepare reports and proposals on Community-academic partnership projects
  • Collaborate in the planning and execution of research-promoting events at RUSM that prioritize student engagement in scholarly dissemination.

Community and External engagement

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of programs in partnership with external organizations locally and regionally. These include but are not limited to Institutes of higher learning and health institutions, Governmental organizations, public health agencies, and other related organizations.
  • Contribute to collaborations with entities that interface between RUSM and external partners.
  • Contribute to the Community Engagement activities.
  •  Assist in development and implementation of local and regional community engagement to establish strong networks, fostering an inclusive environment between the community and RUSM students, and colleagues.
  • Support building of strategic relationships with community partners, as well as partners from the health sector and educational institutions.
  • Support development of community initiatives and programs aligned with local healthcare needs

University Service and Administration

  • Serve on faculty committees as appointed or elected and participate in institutional governance
  • Contribute to the strategic goals of the Office of External Affairs
  • Provide mentorship and professional development for direct reports (as assigned)
  • Participate in accreditation initiatives
  • Participate in the mentoring program and advise individuals or groups of students in academic matters and exercise professional judgment in referring students to appropriate personnel and departments
  • Be a subject matter expert to facilitate research-related support to the RUSM community.

Qualifications

  • MD/DO/MBBS AND Phd or Dr.PH in Public Health Required
  • 5 years minimum work experience in the Community and/or Primary Care setting
  • 3-5 years experience Required; 5+ years preferred experience Teaching in an Academic Environment at the tertiary level
  • Expertise in epidemiology and/or biostatistics strongly preferred
  • 5-10 years requires; 10+ years preferred experience in Public Health Teaching & Research
  • Experience in supervision and mentorship of students and faculty
  • Knowledge of current affairs related to Global health, social and preventative, public health and community programming
  • Proven ability to build community partnerships and engage diverse stakeholders
  • Administrative experience overseeing public health programs and supervision of staff 
  • Community Health practical field experience
  • Scholarly achievements in social and preventative public health or related fields
  • Role may require local and international travel periodically for 2-4 week periods

  • The ability to work in a diverse Community of students, faculty and patients
  • Knowledge in the field of Community medicine, Social and preventative medicine, and public health education and practice and research
  • Ability to succeed in a collaborative work setting
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • A record of ability to network with governmental and non-governmental organizations, and ability to develop new partnerships
  • A self-starter who takes and is a creative and Innovative thinker
