Constable - Co-Response Team (CRT) (INTERNAL ONLY) 2026/27
About this role
The Community Services Division’s Co-Responder Team (CRT) Constables work to combine elements of front-line crisis response with health care services to provide an efficient and effective interdisciplinary response team. The CRT responds to a continuum of crises irrespective of an individual’s physical characteristics, mental wellness, sobriety / substance use, or other public safety concerns. The CRT forms an integrated partnership between VicPD and Island Health to work collaboratively with partners offering wellness and substance use services in the community. Together, the CRT will provide primary and secondary response to persons experiencing mental health and/or substance use related crisis.
Job Description:
- Work 12 hour shifts following a 4 on 4 off rotation. Start time between 0800-0900 in consultation with your partnered MHSU clinician (Island Health Nurse)
- Work in partnership with a mental health clinician
- Assess and establish safety and security; conduct ongoing risk assessments
- Provide de-escalation with crisis response
- Primary focus on wellness and health services. Where enforcement is appropriate, the goal of the Police/Court/Crown process is offender management, safety and wellness.
- Participate in group meetings and participate on working committees
- Collaborate and liaise with community partners to identify appropriate supports
- Liaise with other VicPD members in the field when appropriate
- Facilitate education and training to community partners and police officers

- Demonstrated exceptional communication, intervention and de-escalation skills
- Demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with community service providers
- Demonstrated self-starter who excels working in collaborative teams
- Genuine interest working with people experiencing mental health and substance use challenges and crises
- Demonstrated exceptional communication, intervention and de-escalation skills
- Advanced knowledge of substance use services, shelter protocols and outreach services
