POSITION PURPOSE

The Department of Huuḥtakšiiḥinʔaała is hiring a Summer Youth Worker to help run a fun and engaging summer break program for children and youth. The Youth Worker supports daily activities, helps supervise outings, and learns from experienced staff and cultural mentors. This is a great opportunity for students who want to build experience working with kids, learn more about leadership, and spend time outside this summer. The position is also a learning opportunity — the Youth Worker receives guidance and mentorship while helping to create a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for younger participants.



ACCOUNTABILITY

Daily Programming Support

  • Assist with delivery of summer programming for children and youth.
  • Support daily activities including cultural workshops, land-based learning, arts & crafts, wellness sessions, and leadership sessions.
  • Help prepare, organize, and clean up activity spaces and materials.

Mentorship & Role Modelling

  • Build respectful, caring relationships with younger participants.
  • Role model positive behaviour at all times.
  • Take initiative in supporting youth with diverse needs in a trauma-informed and culturally safe manner.

Field Trips & Safety

  • Participate in field trips and cultural outings.
  • Ensure safety and inclusion for all participants.
  • Follow YG health, safety, and supervision policies.

Cultural Respect & Other Duties

  • Show respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ culture, language, and traditions.
  • Support community programming or outreach as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.



EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Required:

  • Must be an Indigenous secondary or post-secondary student enrolled in school
  • Must be between 15 and 30 years old at the start of the program
  • Willingness to participate in all required staff orientation and safety training

Preferred:

  • Valid First Aid and CPR-C certification
  • Previous experience volunteering, babysitting, or working with children or youth

  • Comfortable participating in outdoor activities and team-based settings

  • Ability to follow directions, ask for help when needed, and take initiative



WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Programs delivered in both indoor and outdoor settings — gymnasiums, forest trails, beaches, and community gathering spaces
  • Active, fast-paced, and youth-focused environment
  • Expected to participate in physical activities and group games
  • Works as part of a supportive team with guidance from program leaders, cultural mentors, and Elders
  • Some flexibility required for early starts, late pick-ups, overnights, or special event days

  • Genuine respect for Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ traditions, culture and protocols
  • Openness to learning Nuu-chah-nulth teachings from Elders and cultural mentors
