The Municipal Fire Prevention Officer role provides an excellent opportunity for an emergency or fire management professional to work across both strategic and operational functions, while contributing to community safety and engaging with Council, regional stakeholders, and state fire management agencies.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Conduct allocated Fire Prevention Inspections in accordance with the inspection schedule
  • Use the Crisis works Fire Inspection system to complete assessments and submit them for processing while in the field
  • Assess the vacant land by completing the Fire Inspection Program using an iPad and submitting the assessment to the EM Team.
  • Direct contractors engaged in fire mitigation activities on Council and Private land throughout the municipality.
  • Support and oversee Tender process for Contractors engaged in fire mitigation.
  • Issue Fire Prevention Notices and facilitate the recovery of non-compliance fines and costs.
  • Carry out statutory tasks related to fire prevention notices and infringement notices and Issue permits to burn (under s38 of the CFA Act 1958).
  • Authorised Assistant Municipal Fire Prevention Officers enforce and prosecute under Councils Local Law, Fire Rescue Act and Country Fire Authority Act.
  • Liaise with fire services, other authorities and councils regarding fire prevention planning and implementation to assist in the development, implementation and review of the Municipal Fire Management Plan and Action Plan.
  • Advise and assist the Municipal Emergency Management Planning Committee (MEMPC) on fire prevention and the annual roadside fire slashing program.
  • Improve compliance with legislative requirements for fire management in our community, through working cooperatively with fire and emergency service agencies to develop implement and review programs for the community.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

  • Knowledge, understanding and application of municipal fire management principles in a diverse organisation, in accordance with the CFA Act 1958, FRV Act 1958 and the State Emergency Management Plan and relevant sections of Council’s Local Laws
  • Proficiency in the application of community engagement and community development principles and practices.
  • Thorough knowledge of legislation, policies and contemporary theories pertaining to Fire Management/Community Safety principles and the ability to apply this to differing problems in the search for solutions.
  • Skills in managing time and setting priorities.
  • The ability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and gain cooperation from people with diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to deal with difficult situations and present positive Council image.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities effectively
  • Demonstrated ability in using MS Office computer products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), and the ability to access, interpret and maintain databases

Required Certifications & Qualifications

  • Formal qualifications in Fire Management, Emergency Management, Community Safety, Risk Management or related disciplines
  • Current driver's license
