Job Description

 Manage the area responsible for the evaluation of insurance risks for the purpose of determining the best product/premium solution through the review of life insurance files, client medical records, financial history, and information provided by agents and/or brokers. Provides guidance on the most complex cases and has full managerial responsibilities for underwriting staff i.e., hiring, firing and performance management. Will have a limited case load that focuses on key clients, and high profile, high priority cases. Develops and manages relationships with agents and/or brokers, carrier underwriters and team members. Works closely with business leaders to help support and drive business. Manager may seek guidance from higher level management on the most complex underwriting issues. (span of control 5-15 FTE as direct reports).

• Strong knowledge of medical and financial underwriting

• Ability to match the right underwriters with the right programs

• Ability to mentor and educate underwriters with less experience without jumping in and doing the work for them

• Ability to balance underwriting skills, knowledge and relationships with management duties and projects

• Ability to motivate and maintain a positive team focus

• Ability to take over work for other underwriters who are out of the office or need assistance

• Previous senior level underwriting experience or equivalent experience AND supervisor experience as previously defined

• Four year college degree in business or a related field or equivalent combination of education and relevant experience (Academy of Life Underwriters, American College, Life Office Management Association active and ongoing enrollment; has attained multiple levels of designation / certification / insurance-securities licensing)

• In addition to all identified Knowledge/Skills/Abilities for Senior Underwriter level and Underwriting Supervisor level:

a. report creation, compilation and management

b. expense management

c. some strategic planning for forecast and direction
