Job Description

At Avenues, we believe art and design are not  peripheral subjects, but  vital languages through which students understand themselves and the world. We are looking for an Art/Design Teacher who brings art and design alive for students through hands-on projects.

In this role, you will inspire students to grow their visual communication skills, design thinking, and technical skills, through authentic project work.. You will exemplify the very qualities we ask of our students: the boldness to take risks, the creativity to solve complex problems, and the collaborative spirit to make those around you better. You will join a culture that values the artistic process as much as the final product, fostering a joyous, rigorous, and inclusive studio environment.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

1. Transformative Instruction & Classroom Culture

  • Nurture Growth: Guide students to grow dramatically in technical skills, passion, technique, and expression, ensuring that every learner reaches their full potential.

  • Cultivate Safety & Risk-Taking: Build a "joyous studio" atmosphere where students feel safe to fail, experiment, and take the bold creative risks necessary for true artistic breakthroughs.

  • Master Your Craft: Commit deeply to your own professional evolution. You will treat your teaching as a craft, constantly refining it through peer observation, student work study, and the development of a professional portfolio.

2. Curriculum & Program Innovation

  • Design Meaningful Interdisciplinary Projects: Creatively develop an art and design curriculum that balances foundational technique with critical thinking. You will guide students through the entire lifecycle of a project—from initial spark and intention to critical reflection and final realization.

  • Integrate Local Soul: Infuse the curriculum with the richness of Brazilian artistic traditions, seamlessly blending local heritage with the global perspective of the Avenues World Elements.

  • Public Exhibition: Ensure that "beautiful work" is not kept within the classroom walls but is exhibited publicly and frequently, allowing students to share their voice with the wider community.

3. Deep Collaboration & Community Engagement

  • Collaborative Design: Work intensively with colleagues across disciplines to design interdisciplinary projects that make learning cohesive and deep.

  • Trust-Based Relationships: Build strong, transparent partnerships with parents through high-quality communication, insightful conferences, and the ability to navigate difficult conversations with grace.

  • Professional Integrity: Maintain the highest standards of professional conduct—from documenting student data and curriculum to meeting deadlines with precision and accountability.

Qualifications

ABOUT YOU

  • You have substantial experience (3+ years) teaching Design, Art, and/or Coding full-time in a Secondary environment.

  • You hold an Arts Education degree (Licenciatura em Artes Visuais/Plásticas ou Educação Artística), OR a Bachelor’s degree in Design, Visual Arts, Fine Arts, combined with a Brazilian Teaching License (Licenciatura) in any other area of knowledge.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills in English (formal and informal). You are comfortable interfacing with families, faculty, and partner organizations.

  • You possess a deep individual creative potential and a firm foundation in art and design techniques.

  • You are expert at providing authentic, frequent, and meaningful feedback that helps students understand their own learning process and craftsmanship.
