Auburn-Washburn Unified School District 437 is a district consisting of 128 square miles of suburban and rural areas in southwest Topeka and Shawnee county. Presently, we have 13 total attendance centers — one early childhood center, seven elementary schools, one middle school, one high school, and two alternative learning centers.

Job Description

TITLE:  Parent Educator    

SALARY: $15.50/hour

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:  8 hours/day, 12 months/year (benefits-eligible)   

JOB GOAL:  To provide leadership and coordination of the Parents As Teachers program according to guidelines established by the Kansas State Department of Education and Parents As Teachers National Center.

REPORTS TO:  Lead Parent Educator of Parents As Teachers Program

EVALUATION:  Performance of this job will be evaluated annually by the                    Lead Parent Educator.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1.         Promote public understanding and support of the Parents as Teachers program.

2.         Implement referrals and schedule assessments.

3.         Conduct home visits and facilitate parent group meetings every six to eight weeks (minimum).

4.         Implement the curriculum provided by the National Parents as Teachers Center.

5.         Gather family data and maintain records of contact with families.

6.         Collaborate with community agencies in providing services to improve health and welfare of families.

7.         Provide information regarding child development and appropriate childrearing practices.

8.         Provide information regarding neuroscience research and the implications for child development.

9.         Individualize presentations for each family.

10.       Share results of screening with parents/guardians.

11.       Observe strengths of parent(s) and child(ren) and recognize behavior and/or development of child(ren) deviating from the expected norm.

12.       Identify inappropriate parental expectations and/or childrearing strategies.

13.       Help parent(s) to be observers, to rake responsibility for decisions regarding their child(ren)’s development, and to be actively involved in activities with their child(ren).

14.       Research materials and community resources needed to address parental needs, concerns and/or questions.

15.       Supervise parent-child playgroups during the assigned working day.

16.       Assist in publications and mailing of monthly newsletter.

17.       Attend monthly staff meetings.

18.       Assist in maintaining resource library.

19.       Assist in planning and facilitating group meetings.  

20.       Compile and submit evaluation data.

21.       Assume responsibility for professional growth to meet requirements for annual re-certification according to Parents as Teachers National Center guidelines.

22.       Practice confidentiality.

23.       Practice good interpersonal skills.

24.       Supports the District’s educational mission for all students and implements all Board regulations and policies in a fair and equitable manner.

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: 

1. Prefer baccalaureate degree.

2. Demonstrated ability to work with young children and parents.

3. Certified through National Parents As Teachers Center.

4. Twenty hours of inservice per year.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Talking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word.

2. Hearing: Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication.

3. Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.  Work involves sitting most of the time.

4. Minimum standard based on the criteria of accuracy and neatness of work for teachers.

5. The worker is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
