The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence:

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV), and its sister organization, the Educational Fund to Stop Gun Violence (EFSGV), are the nation’s oldest gun violence prevention organizations. Through policy development, research translation, advocacy, community engagement, and effective training, we pursue evidence-based solutions to reduce gun death and injury in all its forms.  This position delivers critical research, communication, and presentation on initiatives that advance our work. 

CSGV has engaged Jumpstart:HR, LLC to partner on the recruiting and onboarding efforts for this position.

Job Description

Responsibilities

  • Performing legal and legislative research.

  • Drafting legislation, regulations, memoranda, congressional testimony, reports, and other written materials.

  • Implementing risk-based firearm removal policies.

  • Giving presentations on gun violence, gun laws, and materials produced by the Ed Fund.

  • Analyzing legislation.

  • Analyzing the legal implications of gun-related incidents.

  • Ensuring nonprofit compliance with state and federal law.

  • Working with local stakeholders.

Qualifications

Qualifications 

Candidates must have a J.D. and membership in the D.C. Bar, Virginia Bar, Maryland Bar, or eligibility to waive into the D.C. Bar. Candidates with less than two years of experience are welcome to apply but any applicant must have successful bar examination completion by July 2020. Some background in the following areas is strongly preferred: firearms law, domestic violence law, constitutional law, public and mental health law, public policy, drafting legislation. Candidates must be willing to travel.

Other important attributes include:

  • A strong commitment to gun violence prevention, public health, and health equity and a desire to develop expertise and comprehensive knowledge of this field.

  • Excellent legal research and writing, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to translate complex legal information for a lay audience.

  • Ability to work cooperatively with co-workers, other gun violence prevention organizations, and other stakeholders (i.e. legislators, prosecutors, law enforcement, domestic violence prevention advocates, public health professionals, researchers, etc.)

  • Ability to work independently.
