About the Role 

We’re looking for a Painter/Laborer that will prepare and coat structural steel components for production and delivery. This position is responsible for performing surface preparation to SSPC-SP3 (power tool cleaning) standards, applying standard shop primer coatings, and supporting material handling activities within the fabrication shop. This role directly contributes to product quality, production efficiency, and safe shop operations by ensuring steel components are properly prepared, coated, staged, and ready for fabrication or shipment.


Core Responsibilities

  • Surface Preparation and Coating
    • Perform surface preparation on structural steel to SSPC-SP3 (power tool cleaning) standards.
    • Remove rust, mill scale, dirt, oil, and other contaminants to ensure proper coating adhesion.
    • Apply standard shop primer coatings using appropriate tools, equipment, and techniques.
    • Ensure consistent coating coverage and proper curing in accordance with specifications and company standards.


  • Material Handling and Shop Support
    • Safely operate forklifts and other equipment to move, stage, and position structural steel.
    • Assist with loading, unloading, and organizing materials within the shop environment.
    • Support production workflow by ensuring materials are properly staged and accessible.
    • Assist fabrication and production teams as needed to maintain workflow efficiency.


  • Quality Control and Inspection
    • Inspect prepared and coated surfaces to ensure compliance with project and company requirements.
    • Identify and correct deficiencies in surface preparation or coating application.
    • Maintain consistent quality throughout all phases of preparation and finishing activities.
    • Support adherence to production standards and quality expectations.


  • Safety and Housekeeping
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
    • Follow all company safety policies, procedures, and OSHA requirements.
    • Properly use and maintain tools, equipment, and personal protective equipment (PPE).
    • Promote safe work practices and proactive hazard awareness within the shop.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in industrial painting, steel surface preparation, or similar fabrication shop environments.
  • Familiarity with SSPC-SP3 (power tool cleaning) standards preferred.
  • Experience operating forklifts and handling structural steel materials.
  • Ability to work in a physically demanding shop environment.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to workmanship quality.
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
