About this role

General Definition of Work

Performs semiskilled work assisting with the construction and repair of sewers, operating maintenance machinery, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Sewer Maintenance Manager.

Essential Functions

  • Receives and responds to city facility sewer maintenance issues; inspects, diagnoses, and corrects problem.
  • Assists in the construction operations by raising manhole covers.
  • Operates, maintains, and repairs assigned equipment and vehicles.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the practices and techniques of sewer repair and construction; knowledge of the safe operation of medium to heavy construction equipment and vehicles; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; skill in the use of hand and power tools; skill in the use of mechanical diagnosing equipment; skill in the use and operation of assigned equipment and vehicles; ability to perform manual labor; ability to plan, supervise, and evaluate the work of subordinates ability to pay close attention to small details; ability to work and coordinate on multiple congruent projects; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.


Education and Experience

High School diploma or GED and minimal experience with truck and tanker operation, construction, or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Physical Requirements

This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires tasting or smelling, frequently requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting and climbing or balancing; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work regularly requires exposure to wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment, frequently requires working with explosives and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires working in high, precarious places, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a very loud noise location (e.g. jack hammer work, garbage recycle plant).



Special Requirements

Obtain Confined Space Entry training within one year of hire.

Valid commercial driver’s license with Class A Exempt with Tanker endorsement in the State of Indiana preferred, or must possess a Class B CDL with airbrakes and the ability to obtain the Tanker endorsement in 6 months and the Class A exempt CDL in 1 year.
