About this role

At LEX, we’re developing current and next generation diagnostic instruments that help customers make better, faster decisions.

Joining the team at LEX offers a rare and exciting opportunity to be part of a company that has successfully achieved FDA 510(k) approval with CLIA waiver. A significant milestone that many early stage diagnostic companies strive for, but few accomplish.

Securing regulatory approval is an exceptional achievement, requiring our team to have deep expertise in product development, quality systems, clinical validation, and regulatory strategy. Being part of the team that took their first device across the regulatory finish line means you’ll work alongside professionals who understand exactly what it takes to transform innovative science into a market ready, compliant point of care diagnostics. For your career, our environment provides invaluable exposure to real world regulatory success, accelerated learning, and the chance to contribute to the next generation of diagnostic technologies.

Based onsite at our Melbourn, (just south of Cambridge) offices, you’ll join a perfectly formed collaborative, multidisciplinary engineering team.

This isn’t just another design job. You’ll take concepts from high level requirements through to real world, manufacturable products.

You’ll be trusted, supported, and encouraged to innovate.

What you’ll be doing

  • You’ll lead and contribute to a wide range of electronics development activities, including
  • Designing electronics from objective or system level requirements, selecting components, refining requirements, capturing schematics, and supporting PCBA layout
  • Developing and executing test plans, prototyping, and validating new designs at the bench
  • Working closely with software and mechanical teams to ensure seamless integration
  • Supporting design for manufacture efforts, including test fixtures and manufacturing test requirements
  • Playing a key role in transferring designs smoothly into production

You don’t need every box ticked, but here’s what we are looking for

  • Experience designing electronics with embedded systems and mixed-signal designs
  • Confident using Altium Designer
  • Strong understanding of embedded system design approaches (SPI, I2C, DDR memory, DACs, ADCs)
  • Knowledge of power supply design, including switch-mode supplies
  • Experience with mechatronic interfaces (DC motors, feedback sensors)
  • Appreciation of PCB layout principles

Desirable experience

  • IVD or medical devices, ideally ISO13485 or similar regulated environment
  • Low noise analogue or optoelectronics
  • EMC design and test exposure
  • Familiarity with embedded software (C/C++)
  • Experience transferring products into manufacture or developing test strategies

What success looks like

You’ll thrive if you enjoy solving complex engineering challenges and taking ownership of your designs. This is a fast-paced environment where “right first time” design is valued, but you’ll have supportive and experienced colleagues around you who all work together to solve problems.

How you’ll grow

  • At LEX, you won’t be boxed into a narrow technical lane. You’ll have the freedom to:
  • Support transfer to manufacture of our current platform
  • Help shape the next generation instrument from the ground up
  • Take design authority for key technical areas as you grow
  • Work alongside leading scientists, engineers, and a highly experienced leadership team

  • Employer pension contribution of 10% (+3% personal contribution)
  • Private Medical Insurance
  • Life insurance
  • 25 days’ annual holiday plus bank holidays
  • Discounts and memberships to local sports facilities and the theatre
