About this role

Job Summary

The University of Alberta Students’ Union is seeking a dedicated and passionate Lead, Indigenous Reconciliation to join our team. This vital role will focus on fostering meaningful relationships between our organization and Indigenous communities, promoting understanding, respect, and collaboration. The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues, and will be committed to advancing reconciliation initiatives within our organization and beyond.


This is a term position covering a maternity leave. 


Key Responsibilities

  • Program Development and Implementation: Design, implement, and evaluate reconciliation programs and initiatives that respect Indigenous cultures, rights, and perspectives. Work collaboratively with Indigenous communities to ensure initiatives are community-led and align with their priorities and values.
  • Community Engagement & Partnership: Establish and maintain respectful relationships with Indigenous communities, leaders, and organizations. Act as a liaison to facilitate dialogue, partnership, and collaboration between the organization and Indigenous communities.
  • Education and Awareness: Develop and deliver educational programs and materials for internal stakeholders, including employees and leadership, to increase understanding and awareness of Indigenous cultures, histories, rights, and contemporary issues.
  • Policy Support: Contribute to the development and revision of organizational policies and practices to ensure they reflect a commitment to Indigenous reconciliation and respect for Indigenous rights.
  • Event Coordination: Plan and coordinate events that promote Indigenous cultures and reconciliation, such as workshops, speaker series, cultural celebrations, and awareness campaigns.
  • Reporting and Documentation: Monitor and report on the progress of reconciliation initiatives, document lessons learned, and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Representation: Represent the organization in external forums and initiatives related to Indigenous reconciliation. Advise management on the interests and rights of Indigenous communities within the organization.
  • Advice and Support: Advise management regarding the incorporation of Indigenous perspectives and practices in the policies, activities, and events of the Students’ Union.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Indigenous Studies, Social Work, Cultural Studies, or a related field preferred. Equivalent experience in community engagement, Indigenous relations, or social justice work will be considered.
  • Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities and a deep understanding of Indigenous cultures, histories, and contemporary issues.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage respectfully and effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including Indigenous communities, employees, and leadership.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic and changing environment.
  • Commitment to the principles of reconciliation, equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of the local language(s) of the Indigenous communities in the area is an asset.


Location: This work is primarily in person on the University of Alberta campus. Hybrid work may be accommodated; however, not during the first few weeks of each semester or during the weeks we have key events.
