About this role

Overview

We are hiring a highly skilled Lead Tooling Specialist to serve as the mechanical problem-solver and fixture architect for our aerospace and defense machine shop. This is a critical role for a machinist who thrives on variety, precision, and the challenge of turning complex engineering concepts into physical reality.

Instead of running long production jobs, you will be the person enabling the rest of the shop floor to succeed. You will build highly accurate custom fixtures, machine first-article prototypes, and perform critical rework on high-value parts. If you possess a deep mastery of blueprint reading, a strong command of GD&T, and the ability to confidently program and operate both mills and lathes to tight mil-spec tolerances, we want you on our team. You are the bridge between the blueprint and the production line.

Compensation

  • $45 -$50 / hr
  • 5-15 hrs of overtime / week available

Shift

  • 1st: 6:00am - 2:30pm

Benefits

  • Medical, dental, vision
  • 401(k) with match
  • PTO

Responsibilities:

  • Fixture & Prototype Fabrication: Build custom workholding fixtures to print for CNC machines and assembly processes. Machine complex prototype parts to print, and expertly handle secondary operations and part rework to salvage high-value components.
  • Machining & Programming Strategy: Plan your machining process by studying work orders, engineering plans, orthographic drawings, and material specifications. Program mills and lathes by entering instructions, zeros, reference points, and setting tool registers, offsets, and compensations.
  • Blueprint & GD&T Mastery: Fluently interpret complex geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T) and apply mil-spec knowledge to ensure parts and fixtures are machined exactly to aerospace standards.
  • Precision Setup & Execution: Calculate requirements using shop math and masterfully adjust three- and four-jaw chucks, collets, bushings, cams, and stops. Verify settings by measuring positions, running first-articles, and adhering strictly to quality standards.
  • Inspection & Troubleshooting: Take absolute responsibility for the accuracy of your own work. Use micrometers, calipers, and other high-precision inspection gauges to verify dimensions. Detect malfunctions early and adjust cutting, turning, facing, and threading operations to maintain specifications.
  • Inventory & Documentation: Plan stock inventory, anticipate material needs, and expedite orders for stock. Meticulously document actions by completing all required production paperwork, "travelers," and quality logs.

Qualifications:

  • Experience & Education: 5โ€“6 years of highly relevant experience as a toolmaker, prototype machinist, or senior setup machinist. A high school diploma or equivalent, plus specialized machining training or a completed apprenticeship, is required.
  • Technical Expertise: Deep working knowledge of customer specifications, precision measuring equipment, and machine behavior. Mastery of shop math (fractions, decimals, geometry/trig basics for offsets). Basic computer skills are required.
  • Problem Solving & Autonomy: Proven ability to look at a complex print, determine the best way to hold and cut the material, and execute the plan. Must possess excellent attention to detail and a high degree of accountability.
  • Teamwork & Communication: Strong collaborative skills. You must be a team player who can communicate effectively with engineers, CNC operators, and quality personnel to optimize production setups.
  • Safety & Organization: Strict adherence to OSHA safety requirements, including the use of PPE (goggles, gloves, back belts, aprons, and respirators when required). Commitment to keeping the tooling work area clean, organized, and free of debris.
  • Physical Requirements: Must be able to safely lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Requires specific vision abilities (close/distance vision, depth perception, ability to adjust focus). Capable of standing for long periods, loading stock into machines, and using hands/arms for extended manual setups and machining.
