Position Title: Walking Group Peer Leader (Volunteer)

Number of Positions Available: 4 (2 – Pickering, 2 – South Oshawa)

Commitment Weekly 2-hour sessions (morning or evening based on site), 3–4 months commitment
Work Location: In Person – Durham Community Health Centre (Pickering and South Oshawa sites).

Organization

Durham Community Health Centre (DCHC) is a registered, charitable organization that provides integrated, accessible, and equitable community-based primary care, wellness services, and health education to Durham community members who face multiple barriers to their health and well-being.

DCHC also provides equity-based programs and services that focus on priority populations such as Indigenous, Black, the 2SLGBTQI Community, Newcomers to Canada, Seniors, and Unattached patients (i.e., those without a family doctor), to name a few. DCHC ensures Durham community members receive not only sick care, but preventive care as well.

At DCHC, we are a team-based interprofessional group of staff including physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, counselors, dietitians, outreach workers, medical secretaries, and other administrative staff. We always place every client at the Centre of our approach to care, based on their needs. We address these needs through integrated clinical and wellness care and health education.

Position Overview:

We are seeking motivated and reliable volunteers to support the Diabetes Education Program (DEP) by leading weekly walking groups. This role focuses on promoting physical activity, social connection, and overall well-being in a safe and encouraging environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead weekly 2-hour walking group sessions
  • Identify and follow safe walking routes
  • Take attendance and track participation
  • Encourage group engagement, motivation, and participation
  • Support weekly program activities and challenges
  • Communicate reminders to participants as needed

Qualifications

  • Lived experience with Type 2 Diabetes and prior participation in a Diabetes Education Program (DEP)
  • strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to lead and motivate a group
  • Comfortable leading outdoor walking sessions for up to 2 hours
  • First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
  • Reliable and punctual

Time Commitment:

Oshawa:

  • 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM    OR      4:00 PM – 6:00 PM

Pickering:

  • 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM    OR    4:00 PM – 6:00 PM
