Medical Physicist – Radiation Oncology

Position Summary

A healthcare system is seeking a Medical Physicist to support and advance its Radiation Oncology services. This role offers the opportunity to work with advanced radiation therapy technology in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment while contributing directly to high-quality patient care.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with radiation oncologists, physician specialists, and physics leadership to deliver comprehensive medical physics services.
  • Oversee quality control and quality assurance for radiation therapy and imaging equipment, ensuring compliance with applicable regulatory and professional standards.
  • Supervise and support physicists and medical dosimetrists in treatment planning, dosimetry, and complex case review.
  • Participate in commissioning, acceptance testing, and ongoing evaluation of new radiation oncology equipment.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of new technologies, treatment techniques, and process improvements.
  • Mentor students and staff across physics, dosimetry, and radiation therapy disciplines.
  • Support radiation safety initiatives, policy development, and participation in radiation safety committees.

Equipment & Technology Environment

The department utilizes modern linear accelerators, CT simulation systems with advanced motion-management capabilities, comprehensive QA software and tools, and integrated treatment planning and patient management systems. Advanced programs include stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT), and other specialized radiation oncology treatments.

Team Environment

The Medical Physicist will work within a collaborative team that includes radiation oncologists, multiple medical physicists, medical dosimetrists, and in-house technical support staff. The department emphasizes teamwork, evidence-based practice, and continuous quality improvement.

Additional Responsibilities & Work Conditions

  • May provide dosimetry support as operational needs require.
  • May rotate to other treatment locations to support staffing or patient volume fluctuations.
  • Participation in billing, documentation, and departmental process improvement activities as applicable.
  • Work involves exposure to clinical environments, including stressful situations and patient care settings.
  • Physical demands are classified as light, with occasional lifting and prolonged standing or walking.

Education & Certification Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Medical Physics required; PhD preferred.
  • Board certification or eligibility through the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or equivalent recognized certification.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within one month of hire.

Experience & Skills

  • Experience with HDR brachytherapy, prostate seed implants, SRS, Gamma Knife, IMRT, and related modalities preferred.
  • Ability to achieve full competency across required modalities within two years of employment.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with clinical and technical teams.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows–based systems and willingness to engage in ongoing professional development.
