JOB SUMMARY

Under supervision, assists in the monitoring and operation of the city’s treatment processes and distribution system to ensure compliance with regulations and operational goals.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Learn about and apply water treatment processes and technologies, distribution system practices, equipment, safety, laboratory procedures, regulatory requirements, and general Water Treatment procedures.
  • Participate in monitoring treatment processes and distribution system to ensure compliance with regulations and operational goals, through the use of plant computer systems, observation, analysis and troubleshooting of equipment and processes, and laboratory analyses.
  • Learn and assist in the operation and coordination of treatment and distribution system utilizing plant computer systems, manual control systems and equipment.
  • Learn and participate in the maintenance of instrument and information systems by inspecting, calibrating, and repairing instrumentation, updating, and enhancing databases, and developing and generating reports.
  • Learn to perform work in a safe manner using all required safety equipment and following all required department safety procedures and policies.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform maintenance of equipment and facilities including the ability to communicate the status of equipment and processes to others.
  • Purchase and receive chemical shipments and other supplies.
  • Assist in responses to customer requests and conduct special projects and studies for management as requested.
  • Use the computerized maintenance management system.
  • Follow water system security procedures.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Knowledge of office and administrative practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic water chemistry and biology, and advanced math. 
  • Skill in using PC Software including current Microsoft Office Suite of applications. 
  • Skill in communicating professionally and tactfully with other city employees and the public by oral and written means. 
  • Skill with organization and attention to detail. 
  • Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment utilizing knowledge of the organization's policies. 
  • Ability to work independently under general instructions. 
  • Ability to perform a variety of physical skills including but not limited to carrying, climbing, dragging, driving, filing, lift or exert forces equivalent to lifting up to 80 pounds, pulling, seeing, sorting, squatting, standing, stooping, twisting body, typing, walking, and writing. 
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment including but not limited to PC, telephone, pickup, radio, laboratory equipment, hand tools, plant process equipment, power tools, instrumentation, calculator, scanner, and copier. 
  • Ability to prioritize deadlines and tasks. 
  • Ability to learn new systems and procedures quickly. 
  • Ability to plan, organize, monitor, and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish unit objectives.
  • Ability to understand mathematical calculations involving fractions, percentages, and decimals.
  • Ability to work within a set schedule.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
  • Ability to work in an indoor/outdoor environment.
  • Incumbent is subject to fume/odor, dust/mites, chemical, toxic waste, mechanical, electrical, radiation, and explosive hazards.

Qualifying Education and Experience:

  • Two years (60 hours) of general college courses including Math, Science, Computer Science, or Engineering.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted for above.
  • Possession of valid Texas Operator’s Licenses, Class C
  • Must obtain a Class “D” Water Operator’s License from TCEQ within five (5) months of employment.
