Job Title: Web Server Administrator

Job Overview: As a Web Server Administrator, you will be responsible for the management, configuration, and maintenance of web servers to ensure optimal performance, security, and reliability. You will collaborate with other IT professionals to deploy, monitor, and troubleshoot web server environments, ensuring seamless operation of websites and web applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Server Configuration and Deployment:
    • Configure and deploy web servers, including Apache, Nginx, or Microsoft IIS, according to project requirements.
    • Install and configure server software, applications, and security settings.
    • Implement load balancing and scalability solutions to handle varying levels of web traffic.
  2. Performance Optimization:
    • Monitor server performance and optimize configurations for speed, efficiency, and resource utilization.
    • Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks, including CPU, memory, disk I/O, and network issues.
    • Implement caching mechanisms and content delivery networks (CDNs) to improve website performance.
  3. Security Management:
    • Implement and maintain security measures to protect web servers from cyber threats, including malware, DDoS attacks, and unauthorized access.
    • Configure firewalls, intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS), and SSL/TLS certificates.
    • Conduct regular security audits and apply patches and updates to mitigate vulnerabilities.
  4. Backup and Disaster Recovery:
    • Develop and maintain backup and disaster recovery plans for web server environments.
    • Perform regular backups of web data and configurations and test restoration procedures to ensure data integrity and availability.
  5. Monitoring and Troubleshooting:
    • Monitor server logs, performance metrics, and system alerts to identify and troubleshoot issues proactively.
    • Investigate and resolve server-related incidents and service disruptions in a timely manner.
    • Collaborate with development teams to diagnose and resolve web application issues impacting server performance.
  6. Documentation and Reporting:
    • Maintain detailed documentation of server configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting steps.
    • Generate reports on server performance, uptime, and security incidents for management and stakeholders.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field.
  • Proven experience as a web server administrator or a similar role.
  • Proficiency in configuring and managing web servers, such as Apache, Nginx, or Microsoft IIS.
  • Strong understanding of web technologies, protocols, and standards (HTTP, HTTPS, DNS, TCP/IP).
  • Experience with server-side scripting languages (e.g., PHP, Python, Perl) and database systems (e.g., MySQL, PostgreSQL).
  • Knowledge of security best practices and experience implementing security measures for web servers.
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus) and version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry certifications such as CompTIA Server+, Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, or Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE).
  • Experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud Platform).
  • Knowledge of web application firewall (WAF) solutions and intrusion detection/prevention systems (IDS/IPS).
  • Experience with automated configuration management tools (e.g., Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
  • Understanding of DevOps principles and practices.
