Job Summary/Basic Function

Position Summary

The Career Pathway Advisor assumes the role of a specialized career advisor, taking the lead in guiding and supporting students with aspirations in fields related to health, wellness, research, & human services. This position is responsible for overseeing two (2) career communities (Health, Wellness, & Human Services and Life Science & Scientific Research) and working closely with the Faculty Coordinator for the Health Professions to support the Committee for the Health Professions initiatives.  Additional responsibilities include cultivating alumni and employer networks, developing partnerships with local healthcare providers to support experiential learning opportunities, and curating resources that advance students’ career readiness and professional development .

Essential Functions:

  • Health Professions Career and Professional School Advising: Provide both general and specialized career advising to students and alumni interested in careers related to assigned career communities, including health-related careers, such as medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and other allied health professions. Conduct individual and group sessions to educate and prepare students for internships, research opportunities, full-time job applications, and graduate/professional school applications. This includes guiding them through applications, job search strategies, networking approaches, resume and interview preparation, and salary negotiation guidance. Stay informed about admissions trends and requirements for health-related programs, providing students with up-to-date guidance. Build and maintain relationships with healthcare professionals, alumni, and admissions representatives to create networking opportunities for students. Collaborate with faculty and staff across the college to support students in their pursuit of health-related careers.
  • Internship and Research Support: Contribute to the academic internship program by working with an assigned cohort of students pursuing internships and research related to assigned communities. Establish and formalize partnerships and agreements with local healthcare providers to expand and support student experiential learning opportunities.
  • Presentations & Program Coordination: Facilitate and manage key career exploration events, alumni speaker series, and career treks. Plan at least one career exploration event per community each semester and organize one career trip per year for students in either the Health, Wellness, & Human Services career community or the Life Science & Scientific Research career community. Serve as liaison to Health Professions courses by collaborating with faculty to integrate career readiness initiatives into classroom learning and projects. Deliver engaging presentations in classroom settings, offering students insights and guidance on career-related topics.
  • Industry Knowledge: Collaborate closely with faculty and alumni to understand industry requirements. Stay current with industry trends and develop and present materials on various career topics. Create tailored career exploration programs and organize trips that address the unique needs of each career community.
  • Project Management: Serve as liaison to the Pre-Health Society, working closely with the Health Professions Faculty Coordinator and student leaders. Support Career Development operations and resource development by working with various software and technology platforms, including Handshake, uConnect, and LinkedIn.

Requirements:

Master's Degree

3-5 years of relevant work experience
