About this role

Position Title:                       SENIOR SOFTWARE ENGINEER (Full Time, Exempt)

Who You'll Report To:         Sr. Engineering Manager

About the Role

We are modernizing our backend systems, transitioning from a legacy platform to a serverless Node.js architecture.  We’re looking for engineers who can reason clearly about complex system migrations, bring deep SQL Server experience, and take genuine ownership of their work.

This role is primarily focused on the modernization effort – understanding how our existing systems work, designing modern replacements, and building new capabilities in parallel.  If you’re self-directed, intellectually honest, and thrive when given hard problems to solve, we’d love to hear from you.

Who You Are

  • You take ownership of your work and follow through – you don’t wait to be told what to do next.
  • You’re upfront about what you know and don’t know, and you ask good questions.
  • You learn quickly and stay flexible as requirements and context evolve.
  • You’re self-directed and comfortable structuring your own work in ambiguous situations.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Analyze and understand our existing legacy systems to support the migration effort and handle occasional maintenance and bugfixes.
  • Design and implement a serverless Node.js system to replace legacy components.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure a smooth transition with minimal disruption.
  • Migrate and optimize data from legacy databases to modern storage solutions.
  • Build and maintain APIs, event-driven workflows, and integrations with external systems.
  • Support and troubleshoot production issues related to both the legacy and new platforms during the transition.

Qualifications:

  • Expert-level Microsoft SQL Server and T-SQL – including query optimization, execution plans, indexing strategies, stored procedures, and complex schema design.
  • Strong backend development experience with Node.js and TypeScript.
  • Experience with legacy system modernization – you can speak to migration strategies and tradeoffs, and you’re comfortable navigating systems where documentation is incomplete or absent.
  • Experience with serverless architecture on a major cloud provider (AWS, Azure, or GCP); strong SQL Server expertise may offset limited cloud experience.
  • Java and/or Kubernetes experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with message queues and event-driven architectures is a plus.
  • Hands-on experience with benefit enrollment workflows is a plus.

What We Offer

Base salary: $110,000- $150,000 annually. Eligible for annual bonus earnings, up to 10% of annual salary. Actual compensation offered may vary depending upon many factors, including a candidate’s skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
