Position Type: Respite, Part-Time, Full-Time 
Location: Mentor Home (Private Residence), Edmonton, AB
Program: Chimo – Solo with Supports (SWS)

Chimo Youth Retreat Centre is seeking dedicated Mentors to support youth in our Solo with Supports (SWS) Program.

 

Position Summary:

Mentors provide direct, individualized support to youth, helping them achieve personal goals, implement behavioural strategies, and thrive in a safe, structured, and nurturing environment.

Many youth in the SWS Program are preparing to transition into adult support systems (e.g., AISH and/or PDD). Mentors play a vital role in supporting this transition and fostering long-term independence.

 

Mentor Responsibilities: 

  • Provide direct support to youth in achieving identified goals 
  • Develop and maintain therapeutic relationships with youth and families 
  • Promote social skills, healthy development, and life skills (personal hygiene, routines, independence) 
  • Model socially appropriate behaviour and encourage community involvement 
  • Implement behavioural strategies and provide out-of-home family support 
  • Complete detailed documentation of participant and family communications 
  • Report and document significant incidents to appropriate stakeholders 
  • Adhere to agency policies and procedures 
  • Attend supervision (minimum quarterly), training sessions, and required workshops 
  • Maintain ongoing professional development and community professionalism 
  • Respond to phone messages and emails promptly 
  • Transport youth using a personal vehicle, when required 
  • Connect youth and families with appropriate community resources supporting physical, mental, spiritual, and addictions-related well-being

  • Child and youth development principles
  • Attachment-based practices

 

Experience & Knowledge (Preferred) 

  • Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) 
  • ADHD 
  • Mental health disorders 
  • Other complex behavioural needs




Successful Mentors Will: 

  • Be 21 years of age or older and financially stable 
  • Communicate and collaborate effectively with service teams 
  • Build strong therapeutic relationships 
  • Demonstrate strong computer and documentation skills 
  • Be proficient in spoken and written English 
  • Provide three positive references 
  • Be legally authorized to work in Canada 
  • Understand challenges related to developmental disabilities, mental health, addictions, attachment, and resource access 




Required Documentation 

  • Class 5 Alberta Driver’s Licence 
  • Minimum three years of insurance history and no “At fault” claims (Provided through a 3 year claims experience letter from your insurance)
  • Clean three-year driver’s abstract 
  • Access to a reliable, insured vehicle 
  • Alberta auto insurance ($2 million liability coverage) 
  • Home insurance 
  • Police Information Check (including Vulnerable Sector) for all household members 18+ (issued within six months) 
  • Child Intervention Record Check for all household members 18+  (issued within 6 months)
